Have just been prescribed tramadol for fibromyalgia pains, stupidly looked this up on line and find it is similar to heroin and after paying for the prescription am terrified to take one. Anyone have any experience please

Have you ever taken codeine or co codomol? Side effects are similar. Just take one to start with to see how it makes you feel, if you are worried, take the first one when you are not on your own. I've given hundreds of people tramadol (I'm a nurse) and have yet to see anyone react dramatically to it, most commonly people just feel a bit sick.

Thanks for that, yes I have taken codeine, will take one later tonight before bed and see how it goes

They can give you a 'high' feeling and make you feel spaced out. They can be addictive, but that's only if you take them just to get the high feeling if you take them for pain you are less likely to become addicted. I find if I need a dose the best time to take them is after I have eaten as don't seem to affect me as much then. Might be worth trying your first dose when you don't have to go anywhere until you know how they affect you. My FIL takes them regulary for fibromyalgia and he doesn't seem addicted and he finds they do help with his pain. If you have any concerns the best thing is to speak to your GP they wouldn't have given you then if they didn't think you needed them.

Well, they are strong but do work really well for me but I only take when in extremis as I basically feel very drugged for several hours and can't really do anything.

One side effect I have suffered three times is that I fainted really badly, which has never happened to me before. I didn't connect it immediately as it was about 6-8 hours later. Really unpleasant . It is in the literature but I think quite uncommon.

As I said to my consultant . I have a love hate relationship with it!

So take with a bit of caution. Having said that there are quite a few people on the spoons thread who seem to take Tramadol with no problems and can function, too.

Hope it works for you.

I found it a great painkiller while I was recovering from being hit by a car and took it for around 3-4 months. I didn't have any problems when I stopped taking it.

It did make me feel a bit spacey but, at the time, I was grateful for that!

tittytittyhanghang · 29/07/2013 18:43

my dp had these prescribed after a car accident. He gave me one as I has excruciating toothache. Best painkiller in the world imo :D

Radiator1234 · 29/07/2013 18:45

I was prescribed some after an op, they made me vomit. I guess everyone's different?

Lolaismyfavouriteandmybest · 29/07/2013 18:50

They made me vomit too.... (but we're the only thing that touched my pain at the time)

boxoftricks · 29/07/2013 18:57

It's an opiate, like morphine or codeine. Not immediately like heroin!
I had it prescribed after a car crash a few weeks ago, and taken along side diazapam, I admit I lost 3 days. Completely spaced out. Although once I only took the tramadol, it was great, good pain killer, but I didn't sleep very well on it. Definitely eat something before you take it.

MrsPresley · 29/07/2013 18:58

Oh I love Tramadol Grin

But I can only take them at weekends or when I'm not working as they make me spaced out and unable to drive.

Seriously though, at the moment it's the only thing taking the edge off my pain but still doesn't get rid of it completely Sad

Hopefully though after a scan next week, the dr will know what's wrong with me Smile

Twinklestarstwinklestars · 29/07/2013 19:08

I took them for a fractured hip last year, I had the 200mg slow release ones as they worked better for me as if I took the 50mg ones they wore off overnight and i could barely walk again in the morning. I never felt spaced out or tired and still take them occasionally now, they must just affect people differently.

valiumredhead · 29/07/2013 19:16

Got hooked on them after only 3 weeks of use after a broken leg. Proper, horrible withdrawl with shakes etc. had to see my gp to come of then slowly, which I did over a period of 6 weeks.

valiumredhead · 29/07/2013 19:17

Off them

valiumredhead · 29/07/2013 19:18

Kaster, not true about addiction.

neversleepagain · 29/07/2013 19:28

I took Tramadol for the two weeks before my gall bladder removal surgery. Loved them! I had also given birth to twins 7 weeks previously, took them at night and felt full of energy to get through the marathon night feeds. I also had a Tramadol drip in A&E because of excruciating gall stone pain. That made me high as a kite!

LeGavrOrf · 29/07/2013 19:35

I took them for about 6 months for kidney pain.

Advice - don't take tramadol and mumsnet. Jesus, the crap I posted.

They were very good painkillers. I didn't have a problem coming off them, I tailed off taking them gradually anyway.

mrsmobbs · 29/07/2013 21:27

Thanks for all messages, have taken first one and waiting for side effects, nothing so far, so lets hope I am one of the lucky ones who gets on with them, as fed up being on pain. Only taken one 50mg so will build up gradually.

sashh · 30/07/2013 06:39

I take 4 a day, more if I need to with no side effects. Maybe I'm lucky.

mrsmobbs · 30/07/2013 06:49

first one taken, no side effects at all and to be honest no affect on pain either, so will take 2 today and see what happens. Although did sleep better which is a nice change. Thanks again for replies very helpful.

I take 1 or 2 tramadol at night when my pain is very bad. It gives me wacky dreams and a dry mouth but it does ease the pain enough for me to get to sleep.
