waiting for core needle biopsy results

Yesterday I had a mammogram, ultra sound and core needle biopsy for a breast lump which I have had a long time (but has grown). I was told that based on the mammogram and ultra sound they didn't think there was anything nasty- probably fibrosystic ? changes. However when they did the core biopsy I heard the consultant and radiographer saying what came out looked unusual. They also looked at a lymph node which was highlighted on the screen. They then said it probably wasn't anything bad, they were always honest and would have told me there and then if it was nasty.I have to go back for the results on Tuesday.

My husband is away for a week. My sister is going to look after my children. I don't have anyone to go to the appointment with me. I am now worrying like mad that they will they turn round and give me bad news.

What is likely to happen at the meeting on Tuesday. Do they just discuss the results or do you have to have more tests or make decisions on the spot?

Thank you.

Sorry to read about your worry. But only the drs will know and women have so many different experiences. The majority being benign lumps.

Ist the biopsy must be analysed and the scan images interpreted.
DD had 5 biopsies on a cluster of calcified cells on the Monday and the specialist who did it said she would phone on the Thursday with the results. They were all harmless. She did not have a lump though.
The waiting for the results was a terrifying time. You have my sympathy. Good luck.

They will talk you through the results there will be a breast cancer care nurse there as well as the consultant. Having been through two fine needle aspirate, a core biopsy and finally an excisional biopsy under GA and then final set of results saying it was precancerous change alone the support I got from the consultant and nurse was amazing. I had no choice I'm a lone parent no family nearby.

I went to get the results today and waited 45 minutes (after a 45 minute car journey) only to find they hadn't all come through. I've got to go back Friday. Grrrr!

Thanks for the link gingeroots- will have a look.

How annoying for you :( did they not tell you anything at all today

Sorry you have another wait ahead of you. Waiting is always so hard. Will DH be home Friday?

puffinnuffin · 24/07/2013 11:01

I saw the consultant for literally 2 minutes. They said they were 98% certain it wasn't anything bad but there was a 2% chance it could still be something! They won't know until the results come back. I know that sounds good but I stupidly can't stop worrying until I know definitely.

One good thing is that DH will be home by Friday so he can come with me.

How did you get on?

digerd · 28/07/2013 06:52

OP.
Hope your results were benign. DD had a 20% that it could be something precancerous, but all was benign.
