Hello I am new to this kinda website, Sorry for sharing though a bit worried and embarassed. I am sexually active, and I have not had my period yet. Most mornings when I woke up my underwear is really sticky and wet. Thinking it was just a lot of normal discharge, I went to put new underwear on. Surprisingly, the large amount of discharge is always brown! I bathe regularly, I use wet wipes as well as toilet paper after going to the bathroom, I wear cotton underwear, I hate it because I'm embarrassed of the way my underwear looks and smells, even if it's just me who sees it.

I am a little on the larger side and to tend to sweat quite a bit. (Is this merely sweat reacting with normal discharge)? I'd like to know how to prevent it from happening as much, and maybe how to treat the underwear when washing. I have asked various doctors about it but they kind of just shrug it off and tell me "oh, it happens".

Hi Lesley. Don't be embarrassed. It's a human body - we all have one.

When you say you haven't had your period yet, i'm assuming you mean you aren't currently on your period?

Brown discharge is common at the start and end of your period. It's basically all the old blood mixing with your normal discharge. But if there's a smell, and/or this is happening every morning, it's not normal. Normal daily discharge should be clear and not have a strong smell.

The fact there's a lot of it is also possibly a normal thing, too. Some people just have more than others.

But if this is a new thing - the increase in volume - it may mean there's a problem.

I'd say to cut out the wet wipes. These could be irritating your vaginal area. If you're bathing everyday, there shouldn't be an issue with your personal hygiene.

Your doctor's response to your concerns is shocking. I'd go back and insist they take tests to rule out infection, and then refer you to someone who can and will investigate further.

I am guessing that 1990 is the year you were born? To be sexually active before your period either puts you very young or you may have an underlying problem (as I did so not judging)

lesley1990 · 20/07/2013 00:15

Yes mummyplonk 1990 is the year i was born and yes whistlingnun yes it is happening on a regular basis every morning if honest and no I am not on a period. I do have an appointment booked in for soon I am just worried what might happen if they find something

How long has it been going on for (the brown discharge)?

Is there a smell to it?

Can you remember it starting after a particular sexual encounter? Perhaps with a new partner?

Do you have any pain in your tummy, or when you pee?

Are you using protection when having sex? Are you on any birth control?

It's most likely nothing serious. Perhaps just an infection. Try not to worry.

This could actually even be your period. Or light spotting between periods.

Just make sure you get a urine sample checked at your appointment to rule out infection. If it comes back clear, insist on further tests and a referral to a specialist. This is your right. Don't leave that office until you get one.

Lesley, don't worry if its old blood or new blood it is just your body discharging it, I didn't have my first period until I was 17 and it was usually only brown blood for a couple of days, but unfortunately it was it seemed a bit smellier and nastier than a usual period (am guessing from questioning my friends at the time) but don't worry, I only ever had 4 proper blood periods in my life and I have two babies (Naturally) ,mind you I was given all the worry by the doctors first that it might not happen. So try not to worry, use some panty liners and keep your best pants tidy.

mummyplonk · 20/07/2013 00:35

Sorry just to say, agree with whistling, if it is every day you have the discharge though that means you need to see an expert. X

lesley1990 · 20/07/2013 00:35

digerd · 20/07/2013 16:28

Could it be Cystitis?
Just looked up the symptoms as never had it myself, but pain when weeing is one of the signs and dark brown urine that has blood in it.

OP
I have this occasionally, and to find out if it is coming from the vagina or the urethra - bladder outlet-, I insert a small lillet in my vagina and with me it always comes from my womb.
Hope you get it sorted soon.
