Ferrous sulphate.

Was prescribed this for low iron, have been on them five days now and have dirreah?.

I thought iron made you constipated?.
Also have stomach and lower back pain not sure if thisis all Iinterlinked.

Any advice appreciated.

Possible side effects of Ferrous sulphate tablets

Most medicines can cause some side-effects but not everyone taking the same medicine will get the same side-effects.

The following side-effects have been associated with people taking this medicine:

hypersensitivity reactions such as rashes or anaphylaxis
gastro-intestinal irritation
nausea
stomach pain
diarrhoea
dark coloured stools
altered bowel habits such as diarrhoea or constipation - constipation may lead to faecal impaction

Tell your doctor, as clearly you won't be absorbing the iron properly if it's all coming out again quickly! Some people can only manage liquid iron supplements.

Are you taking them after food? You should, to reduce this problem.

Ask your GP or your pharmacist about ferrous fumarate - easier on the stomach.

Take with vitamin C to increase absorption.

I get the same. Its awful.

Try this- take 2 sachets of spatone every morning (an hour before food if possible) with Berocca (Vits B& C).

This got my iron up really quickly and no side effects. No tea/coffee for an hour afterwards though as this stops it being absorbed.

you might be better with the fumerate. I have that and it can make me feel a bit sickly just after taking it but other than that fine.
