DD2's Glue ear is is so bad she is practically deaf

Took DD2 to ENT yesterday. She had a hearing test and failed it spectacularly. She had a picture taken of her ear drum too and that was also bad.
We then went to see the doc and he said that DD2's glue ear is in a bad way and so she will be having grommets fitted asap. They were amazed by her speech as she is practically deaf atm. Grommets will rectify this. Now to wait for the op.

Finally you know. How is her screaming sessions going? Has she calmed down at all?

were you offered hearing aids at all? DD3 was instead of grommets, I really wish now that we'd gone down that route instead of opting for the grommets, sadly these seem to have failed, her hearing has deteriated along with her behaviour.
Her grommets were still insitu in April when she went for her last appointment.

I feel that at school I'm banging my hea against a brick wall as the teacher keeps "forgetting" to move her to the front to ensure that she can hear prop=erly, all she keeps saying to me is "well I have quite a few children with hearting deficits and they can't all sit at the front"

Am thinking about getting her hearing test bought forward and see if the auiology depoartment can help me sort the teacher out. Poor DD has already lost out so much because nobody realised just how deaf she really was. Sorry rant over.

Great that you've found this out. My ds is very similar (also has the associated behaviour) - he is on his second lot of grommets but they don't seem to be very effective.

Good luck - do you know if you have long to wait?

Hope so.
Hurrah for dx of problem.
My niece had grommets and it is totally fine, amazing improvement afterwards in that she could clearly suddenly hear what we were saying.

the waiting list for grommets is short atm so we could be looking for as short a wait as 6 weeks!

and yes all the associated things are down to her ears.... behaviour, sleep, balance, general health....

I hope so CF! She is currently downstairs watching Mr Tumble in her sister's raincoat. Nothing else. And its very hot here so she's sweating cobs! Plus screeching intermittently Sad

it's such a relief to be told what's up! Glad they will sort her out before the winter comes around again.

we (well dd Smile) are on the waiting list at the mo (her hearing loss is also bad) aswell and hennipenni, we also get the 'forgetting to move to the front' thing grrrr

Hi YG! At last you have some progress. My ds had grommets at aged 2 and the improvemnet was enormous.

Get ready for loads of runny ears (yuk) but the fluid has to go somewhere and out is better than in, then her ear drums can vibrate and voila better hearing and happier child.

BTW the Op will be far worse for you then for her!

Its weird northerner I actually wish her ear drums would perforate, then the crap inside would have somewhere to go! Until the grommets are in she is in agony. All the time. And so she is not a nice child to be with most of the time. I feel so down about the fact that she is in pain and nothing I can do will help her. But now I am feeling better as I know soon she will be so much better!

foxinsocks, keep hassling the consultant's secretary. I am going to ring them next week and say we will take a short notice cancellation and all that!

Poor little mite. We only had to wait 4 weeks for ds's op and they really were fab with him. Hope she gets an appointment soon. She will be a different child afterwards just you wait and see.

I rang our consultant's secretary today and found out that DD2's op was scheduled for 9th August. Typical, that's when we're in Portugal!
So it has been rescheduled for 23rd August which is fine. She can't have it done before we go away as they don't like them to fly for 6 weeks post op, plus she wouldn't have been able to go in the pool or the sea.

The grommets worked well for dd. She had polpys removed at the same time in one fell swoop and she felt pretty bad after the operation because that was obviously making swallowing painful. I think if it's just the grommets, the operation won't be too bad and they're bound to help. Dd hasn't had an ear infection since either and she used to get them all the time.

Yorkie, hurray - at least she will be able to go in the water on hols, and you KNOW when the op will be. I am so pleased!
