Ouch ouch ouch! why no hardcore painkillers?

MaryAnnSingleton · 18/07/2013 18:17

yup,fraid so- sympathies.

Mama1980 · 18/07/2013 18:21

Oh ouch I've had this few painkillers either. The only position that helped/was comfortable was kind of propped up at 45 degrees with pillows. A hot water bottle as well eased the grinding pain, but might be difficult in this weather! Get better soon Thanks

rubyslippers · 18/07/2013 18:45

I'm allergic to lots of pain killers :-(

Thanks for the sympathies - I can't bear the thought of a hot water bottle

I have one too - not too painful during the day after 3 weeks but night time is tricky - getting comfy for sleeping is hard. 2 pillows plus a maternity pillow to stop me rolling onto my front is helping.

Apparently it can take 6/9 weeks to repair - oh joy

RoooneyMara · 18/07/2013 18:54

Ah Ruby how on earth did you manage that lass?

Poor thing Sad

Much sympathy Flowers

rubyslippers · 18/07/2013 21:36

Good tips about the pillows - have got a v cushion which I can use

I did it by slipping and landing on the back rest of a wooden chair

It's not even a good story Wink Sad

My DH cracked my rib by giving me a bearhug. I screeched, he didn't believe me. OW! You have my sympathies.

thequietone · 18/07/2013 21:48

Oh no, my sympathies. I did the same slipping on Buzz Lightyear that DS1 left on the stairs. Flew up in the air and landed on the stair edge.

I couldn't deal with the awful painkillers. Slept half upright, eased out of bed by rolling to my side and pushing myself up to sitting position. I unfortunately had a cough at the time, didn't prepare and consequently broke the rib. Went with a loud pop and a trip to a and e.

My best advice is to prepare very well for sneezes and coughs. Hold yourself tightly as possible around your torso and try to relieve the cough/sneeze with minimal damage.

Best wishes x

I fractured a rib by a prolonged bout of rather violent coughing! It was excruciating so you have my sympathies. That's one of the unfortunate things that you don't get much sympathy from those around you, because you don't have a cast or bandage to show your break and the pain you're in!!!

When I first did it (and didn't know) I slept with the cord of my dressing gown around my body over the place it hurt my rib. The pressure seemed to help ease the pain - especially when I had a coughing fit (although hopefully you don't have a cough at the mo?!). You aren't suppose to bandage/restrict your ribs apparently though, so that you can still breathe and cough normally (although maybe that was particular to me and not getting chest infection).

One tip if you do need to sneeze (absolutely excruciating!!!)....press upwards on the cartilagey bit between your nostrils until the urge passes. Again, not sure if that would be Dr approved as sneezing does serve a purpose - but I really couldn't bear it at the start of the healing process.

I had one years ago. The most painful thing ever, even worse than labour and two weeks postpartum with a badly stitched fanjo.
I did mine coughing, thought I'd punctured a lung!

gamerchick · 18/07/2013 22:04

You need a bean bag to lean on. It was the only thing that helped not being able to sit/lie down.

rubyslippers · 21/07/2013 08:21

Aw thanks everyone

Days I'm managing but nights are awful as I can get comfy

Tried sleeping sitting up which doesn't work and if I lay down I wake after an hour or so as the pain gets worse

I've not sneezed since I did it - too scared!!
