Gallbladder and weight gain

Runwayqueen · 06/07/2013 16:23

I'm waiting for a surgery date to have my gallbladder removed, as I have two large stones and my gallbladder is contracted right round it.

Just wondered really if people who've had this have gained weight as opposed to loosing it like most do. I've been on a very low fat diet religiously to avoid attacks but I'm gaining weight rather rapidly Hmm

non medical, but i have hypothyroidism and it is linked to gallbladder probs. do you have any thyroid probs? can cause weight gain as a symptom

Thank you for replying.

I'm not aware of any thyroid problems, I've had mine checked in the past, although not recently (unless it formed part of the routine pre-op blood test)

I initially lost 5 stone (seperation stress) but put 1 back on believing it to be my body settling out, but since jan I've put another back on despite the low fat diet.

I've got to see my gp soon so I'll ask her if she thinks its worth rechecking my thyroid

Thyroid is not necessarily related to weight gain if you are on the right dose of Thyroxine as prescribed by your GP. I'm on 150 ug which is quite high and recently I have lost nearly thirteen kilos by cutting out all sweet stuff - cakes, sweets, chocolate, fizzy drinks etc and substituting bananas, raisins, plenty of veg. It takes a while to get used to this new regime, but it works well, especially if you include a little exercise. This only needs to be a walk once or twice a day if you can manage that.

See I did look at what sweet stuff I was consuming and that hasn't increased, and my weekly physical activity hasn't decreased either. On fact I'm on the verge of severely increasing it to see if that helps my weight.

I think I'll try and get a non urgent appointment with my gp and see what her take is on it. I suffered an early miscarriage in may buy had put some weight gain down to being pregnant, but as its still rising and quickly I need to find out why
