Anaemic - advice please

Hi

I had blood tests last week and receptionist told me my level has come back as 23 and I have a prescription for iron tablets at the surgery to collect.

Is 23 very anaemic or borderline does anyone know?

I've tried iron tablets before because whilst my iron levels have been fine my ferritin (sp) levels have been borderline at 11 since I had dd and a pph. Dd is 3 in September.

Iron tablets make my IBS horrifically bad as do spatone.

Any advice anyone? Have appt to discuss with GP but not until 25th

I don't know as it sounds like a different reading to the blood count I'm familiar with. Maybe ask what the measure was of, as I had anaemia a while ago - my daily count was just normal but my stores were really low, maybe yours is the same/opposite?

I have IBS and also can't tolerate iron tablets. I took floradix and had to build up the dose from 1//4 dose once a day to a full dose twice a day. It took me about a month to get there but I'm fine with it now.

Thanks reastie.

My issue was with iron stores before but has now progressed to anaemia as far as I understand it.

I certainly feel absolutely beyond exhausted.

I was the same bea, it was awful. It took me a couple of months or so to feel normal again as floradix is slower working than iron tablets as they aren't as strong. Great excuse to eat tons of dark chocolate legitimately though Wink oh, and I still can't tolerate floradix on an empty stomach like it suggests, I have it with meals and I have a glass of orange juice before the meal to help the iron absorption.

Will definitely ask about floradix , thanks.

Would love to not feel so shit!

I'm sure that's what mine was after I had a haemorrhage when I gave birth and another time at the blood donors.

It wasn't bad enough to get iron tablets, I just had to keep eating iron rich foods and ensure I had further blood tests to check it didn't get any worse.

Hmmm yes my problem is I'm also vegetarian

My iron tablets are Ferrous Fumerate, which don't seem to have the catastrophic effect on my inner workings that other iron supplements do.

Interesting Betty thanks

Lots of green veg will do it. Hope you get better soon.
