Regular periods suddenly extremely heavy from day 4 - normal?

Am 43 and not on any form of contraception. This is my second month of a period starting normally but then around day 4, it turning almost overwhelmingly heavy and (poss TMI warning) am having to change largest tampon I know of and a pad about twice an hour at peak flow. Two heavy days and then back to normal again. Weird.

Is this a normal part of getting older for some people or something I should see a GP about?

I get this I am perimenopausal I am 47 now but started being perimenopausal around 41. The other symptom I had early on is a feeling of generally feeling well not a full blown hot flush. Now I have full blown hot flushes. 5 days without my HRT due to the prescription getting lost and wow it was just awful. May be worth discussing with your GP?

Generally feeling well or unwell Honeybee? I'm definitely hotter in bed (ha!ha!) than I used to be 6 months ago but it's hard to tell what's ageing and what's dodgy thyroid! Hmmm ... maybe I ought to brave the nightmare of the local GP's appointment system and see if I can get to see someone ...

I felt slightly yuck and yes I was hot in bed too. Do not let them fob you off it may be perimenopause its exactly how I started but best rule anything else out. You are not too young to be perimenopausal. HRT is a wonder drug its fab. Menopause Matters Forum is excellent for detailed info.

Yes, worth seeing GP to check that this is normal - it sounds quite typical for menopause, or for adenomyosis. But you should always get changes to periods checked out.

Okay, I shall try and get an appointment. Thank you both for getting back to me, much appreciated, and I shall take a look at the Menopause Matters Forum Honeybees.
