Cough- four weeks and getting worse

Have a sort of chesty cough but not coughing anything up for about 4 weeks. Didn't have a cold at all. Could this be hay fever? No streaming eyes or anything

Can make gp appt for two weeks time or go and queue on day for emergency appt at 8am which Would be tricky with the school drop off.

Surgery doesn't do telephone appts. In dilemma as I am sure cough will get better in two weeks (although I thought that last week)

Gp is famously grumpy about misusing emergency appts

What should I do..

Thanks
Debbie

Yes, it could be an allergy such as hayfever or asthma.

How do you feel in yourself? If you don't have any other symptoms such as temperature, headache etc then an allergy is likely. If it is asthma then inhalers will sort you out very quickly. You will probably be given a brown preventer to take night and morning which will take a week or so to work, and also a blue ventolin inhaler as a reliever which you use when your cough is bad - this works in a few minutes.

Personally, I think if you have had something for 4 weeks you are entitled to see someone in the next few days. I think 2 weeks is too long to expect you to wait. It is not an emergency so I think I would make the appointment for 2 weeks hence and then phone each day to see if they had a cancellation.

Alternatively, is it easier to get an appointment with the practice nurse? I have bypassed the system on a couple of occasions when I have been desperate - she will go and get a doctor if she is unsure.

Really hope you feel better soon.

Oh in a way I hope it's not hay fever as I'm 45 and thought I wouldn't suddenly develop anything like that at my age
Glad you agree it's not an emergency though and if I book an appt for two weeks time I'm sure it will be better my then
Thanks
