Sudden hearing loss

I was snoozing on the sofa earlier and when I got up, noticed that my left ear had gone 'funny' - you know when you get that really temporary beeep sound in your ear. Just like that, but without the sound - sort of underwater feeling but not congested or anything.

I've tried holding my nose and trying to blow through it (as if equalizing pressure when scuba diving or plane descending) but that hasn't helped.

Has been like this since 3:00pm, so about 7 hours now. DH thinks it's probably just temporary but I'm a bit concerned. Blush I had grommets as a child but not suffered from ear infections or anything, don't own anything with headphones, haven't been to an indoor gig for a good few years and haven't been swimming recently.

Has anyone else ever experienced similar? Will I get laughed out of the doctor's surgery?

Could be some wax has moved and blocked it? I had that after a concert, I was convinced I had made myself permanently deaf from the loud music but it had just jiggled the wax around! Had it syringed out and all was well!

It's probably wax.

Have you had Hayfever or a cold? I had glue ear reoccur and I am in my mid thirties. Previously had grommets as a child too.
