Do you have friendly bacteria?

I've got some free samples of Yakult this morning from my milkman, along with some very convincing blurb.
Does anyone use this or anything similar and do you think that it does you any good?

I've mananged for 40 years without having friendly bacteria, why do i need it now?

My dd (8 mths) woke up last week covered head to toe in a really bad rash. It blanched but obviously worried we still spent the morning at the hospital. The doctor said it must have been something she ate. The only thing she had that was different was an 'active' yoghurt. We've not given her any more and the rash has dissappeared. Has anyone else had a reaction to these products?

What flavour was the yoghurt?

magnum · 08/02/2004 07:33

It was a strawberry one I think

I would be more inclined to blame the strawberries than the active "bits" myself. Try a peach or apricot one maybe. Lots of babies are sensitive to red and berry fruit, but they grow out of it.

my friend is a nutrionist and says that most probiotic drinks like yakult are not good as the amount of sugar in them negates any benefits from the friendly bacteria. She says that they really are pretty pointless. She recommends the powders that starry mentions.

I've been giving Yakult to ds (aged 3) for a few weeks since he was ill over Christmas and New Year and had 2 lots of antibiotics and a dose of thrush in his mouth.

He's so energetic he is wearing us out. We are thinking of swapping the Yakult for Bromide and dh wants to take the Yakult himself instead.
