11 month old, fever but otherwise okay

I think I'm just panicking, BUT .. ds woke up an hour ago with a really high fever. He seemed a bit offish just before bed, but otherwise fine. After some Calpol and milk, and a cold flannel, his temp is coming down and really he seems like he just wants to go back to sleep!

Have been waiting for the last HOUR for NHS Direct to call me back.

If there are any more experienced mums out there, would love to have some reassurance. Like I say, he seems okay, just very hot, even in no clothes.

Thanks sfx, at the mo dh is trying to get him back to sleep, he seems knackered, the poor little bean! Really don't want to go to A&E on a Friday night, but can't get to the Out of Hours place (if it's even open) until sodding NHS Direct phone back.

try not to panick.
for starters ditch the cold flannel.
If you have a fan put it on him
if he can have nurofen give hi a dose, it is more effective at bringing down a temp.
strip him to his nappy and have a check over for rashes etc. put him to bed witha vest and no covers.
LEt him sleep it is the bodys natural way to fight nfection.
If he wakes offer him plenty fluids.

i know its hard not to let your imagination run riot. dd has a cold and a temp last night (not too high) i kept her cool and like chaps says checked for any rash,temp came down by 3am and she settled better.
just keep and eye and try not too worry too much
nhs direct do take their time sometimes but they also prioritise

Thanks chapsmum, can't believe I didn't think of the fan, although the window was open. Anyway, fan on him as well now. We don't have any Nurofen for babies, but his temp seems well down now. Wonder if I should go out in search of just in case. (Ironically, we have painkillers ranging from paracetomol to liquid morphine - as one does - but nothing suitable for a baby except Calpol!).

I think this is going to be a long night for me, if not for ds. Thanks for the thoughts.

tribot, you can get it at most garages and it is realy handy to have incase the calpol isnt owrking or you are approaching the three hour mark with the temp rising. The neurofen works in a different way and the two together are effective at controlling a temp. The temp itself is just the bodys way of fighting infection. Keep him as cool as youcan and phone back if you feel he is getting worse.

Oh PS, no rash.

A friend of mine's ds had febrile convulsions after a sudden high fever, so was mentally preparing myself for that - he is fine, but obviously it required immediate action by my friend. (Afterwards we had an entire conversation where I couldn't understand what was wrong with the little one cos she was translating it from Swedish as fever cramp).

Anyway, NHS Direct (who have finally called back) say he sounds like he's okay, his temp is back down now anyway, will phone my mum so she can go to bed!

Thanks both. Ds is still v warm this morning but appears to be taking it all his stride, charging about like a loon and climbing the stairs at any opportunity. (Well, in the brief period he was awake this morning anyway, now into hour three of nap time).

Got a bit of sleep, but feeling pretty crappy all round. Today is dh's birthday, thankfully he is too ill to want to do anything anyway!

Although .. now he has a rash on either side of his tummy. Waiting for NHS Direct to call back. Again!
