What should my wound be like 2 weeks after back surgery?

Had discectomy just over 2 weeks ago. About 24/36 hours ago wound starred itching and is red all around it. No sign of 'ooze'. A bit sore and quite swollen (a bulge) towards top of incision. Does this sound right or should I be worried?

Ok thanks- I do feel ok in myself. Will try and see practice nurse on Monday to double check it as long as nothing worsens tomorrow. Just a bit disheartened as it seems to be getting worse rather than better!

Saw nurse 8 days after op and she said it wasnt ready for stitches to come out. She cleaned it and put near steri strips and dressing on. I reinvested dressing yesterday (a week later) as it was coming loose and catching on clothes.

Signs of infection are redness, heat, pain and swelling

Redness and itchiness are also normal in the healing process but after 2 weeks new symptoms like this should be checked out.

ggirl · 01/06/2013 16:45

Most stitches should come out 10-14 days after surgery

TallGiraffe · 01/06/2013 16:54

Itching is a sign of healing. Redness on the wound is ok, redness on the skin around it is not. See your practise nurse to be on the safe side.

I would definitely get it checked on Monday. If however you start to feel unwell, have a raised temperature or the erythema spreads further then you should get it checked sooner.

notyummy · 03/06/2013 22:54

Just to let you know- practice nurse checked it today and said def not infected. Have had reaction to plaster plus been doing too much stretching etc too soon (am usually a big exerciser and the enforced layoff is killing me!) So all well- just not too much stretching!

Good to hear you got it checked and glad all is well, take it easy!
