How long will lactulose take to work?

Just that, really. First time I've taken it, due to side effects from iron supplements. I've got a two hour drive on the M25 with a lack of services tomorrow, will I be alright to do it, or do I need to stay near a loo?

Also, is it normal to feel really cold and ill when you're constipated. Because I do. And my bum hurts so much that sitting is impossible.

It won't cause anything dramatic to happen so don't worry - just a 'softening'. I had it too after iron tablets did the same Nice Grin

As OP says, it isn't a laxative, just a softener to make it easier when you do go! Good luck

Lactulose takes a couple of days to work at least, but if you are in pain with constipation you may go sooner. Like other posters have said, it is a softener so you will have some warning. It works by increasing the water content in your bowel so you do need to drink lots of fluids while you are taking it. Also, once you have had success, continue to take it twice a day to re-establish a routine.

Good luck, it is horrible

All better now! I'm not sure if it was the lactulose, the walk to pick up a dress or the milkshake, but I'm so relieved (literally) it's over.
