Steroid cream - how long to use for?

I've got a small patch of dermatitis/thrush/eczema/something. I've had it for about 4 months. A couple of weeks ago was prescribed Trimovate and that did seem to shift it. I was told to use it for 2 weeks in decreasing amounts. But since I have been tapering it off, the patches have come back a bit. I think if I stop using it it will just completely come back.

Should I just keep using it until the marks are completely gone, then switch down to, e.g. hydrocortisone for a bit? I'm not actually sure what's causing the rash but it hasn't spread very much over 4 months. When I found out it might be thrush I used lots of soap and things on it and that did make it spread a little. Just antifungal with no steroid had no effect, so I'm wondering if it's even fungal at all. Tea tree oil didn't really do anything either, the only thing that had effect was steroid cream and moisturising. So is it ezcema?!
