Recurrent mouth ulcer help!!!

Hello,

I suffer from recurrent mouth ulcers...currently I have about 15 in my mouth and in absolute agony and have been for nearly 2 weeks. They start off as just a couple then as the days go on get bigger and spread in my mouth. SO PAINFUL

I have oragel, difflam oral rinse and although these numb the pain for a bit it's still agony and so hard to eat drink and even talk :(

I went to the docs a few times about it, have suffered since 2010 and I'm 25. Docs tested me for celiac disease which was negative and she said its probably just my hormones causing them. Most times when I'm on, I get ulcers. I have been on for nearly a month as had depo injection and body is being annoying and have now got the worst ulcers ever.

Does anyone else suffer with this? If so, how do you control the outbreaks and how can I get rid of them. I know they're only ulcers but I get so low being in constant pain I just feel like cutting them out!

Do you take vitamin b supplements? I find that if I have ulcers then a few days of taking a high strength b complex (holland and barrett do one) gets rid of them.

Although, bizarrely, if I take too many when I don't have ulcers it gives me them. Seems to be a weird balancing act for me but most of the time controllable.

I had this, up to 20 at a time

I did the whole30 and they just went but I accidentally are some sugar the other day and now I have 5 again.

I guess I'm a bit sensitive to refined (not fruit) sugar.

In definitely going to get those vitamin b supplements! Ill do anything to get rid of these bad boys!

I was wondering actually if it was worth me asking my dentist so I will do that also and see if he can help. I don't think I grind my teeth but then again who knows!!! Mouth guard definitely sounds worth investigating!

I really hope I'm not stuck with these for life :( I really feel for anyone who gets them

I don't take vitamin b but I started taking multi vitamins about a week ago...no impact at all so far so will get vitamin b

Ah sorry I keep forgetting to reply to questions. The ulcers are inside my cheeks, inside my lip and also where the lip meets the gum on that it of tissue (mega painful brushing my teeth!) also get then round sides of tongue and under tongue at the side. I'm ridden :(

The only thing thing that's worked for me is getting pregnant- 7 months of bliss so far. Not one ulcer.
They were definitely linked to being on, so will see if they return. I usually avoided sugar, used corsidol and a soft toothbrush to avoid making them worse.

My DH suffers badly until he changed his toothpaste to Squiggle. It has no SLS and lots of xylitol. He can't change back but now rarely gets ulcers.

Take a zinc supplement with B vits, zinc deficiency causes weakness in connective tissue so skin breaks easily, this applies esp to the delicate mouth lining. Zinc helps in healing generally too.

My dh has been eating an egg a day which has almost stopped his mouth ulcers. He just puts one in a ramekin or tea cup approx 1 minute in the microwave
Don't forget to.pierce the yolk
Add a few drops of veg oil or a tiny knob of butter
Cover with cling film or kitchen roll
Contains all the zinc B vits and more suggested by other posters
He's evangelical about it!

Prednisolone meltlets - the only thing that works for me.

My DS (age 30) suffered really badly from these. He lives in France & the French doctor told him to stop using toothpaste containing sodium laurel sulfate and to stop using ibuprofen or any other NSAID type drugs.

Ulcers have all cleared up & he hasn't had another one in two years.

A friend who also suffered & was taking ibuprofen for a bad back gave it up with the same result.

Corsodyl mouth wash was the only thing that got rid of mine.

L-Lysine supplements (can also get then from H&B) were the only thing that helped with mine - I had them really badly as well.

Another vote for vitamin b supplements. Get mine from Boots - one a day every day keeps them away now.

you need to up your b vitamins ie wholegrains and supplement. also how much vitamin c do you have? I had lots of mouth ulcers as a child and it was vit c deficiency (ie scurvy )

also try rubbing myrrh tincture on the ulcers. it tastes gross but works really well.

Have you had any blood tests to rule out anything underlying? I have an autoimmune disease and both the disease and the immunosuppressive drugs cause ulcers.

Another one here avoiding SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate) in toothpaste. Try Sensodyne (check the label as they do different varieties, I seem to recall most but not all are SLS-free). Since I've done this I've had hardly any mouth ulcers.

Mind you, although I got them regularly I never had 15 at once!

Toothpaste here too - I switched to Corsodyl, which is vile, but it really worked - no ulcers for a whole year. Wish I'd known sooner - 15 years the little buggers blighted my life for!

There's also adcortyl in orabase (kenalog in orabase) which is no longer available in the uk, but I go it from an NZ pharmacy. It's like the hydrocortisone tablets you get which you have to try and keep on the ulcer (impossible), but it sticks. Worth a try!

If you consistently have really nasty mouth ulcers that take a long time to heal, then you should go back to your GP and ask for help or a referral - large, long lived ones can be signs of things (and good on your gp for testing for coeliac - I had loads of mouth ulcers before I was diagnosed).

My dad has a rare condition where he has terrible mouth ulcers and has specialist help to manage them now, and his come in waves of awfulness

I know it may sound strange but I do have an unusual cure for mouth ulcers that has always worked for me. Try yogurt. It has to be plain yogurt (no sugar). If you want to boost this natural remedy and make the ulcers go away in just a few hours (for me it's minutes) try sprinkling yogurt with organic whole husk fibre. Don't leave it to sit or the fibre will expand. It gets a bit chewy though it has the same effect. Still a wholly natural remedy.
Mouth ulcers are caused by gut issues. Yogurt and husk are super-foods for your gut. Simple.
I have always read mumsnet but never felt the need to join. However, I thought it cruel to let people suffer when I know how to help them so there you are people. Let me know if you try it and it helps.

I used to really suffer too, for me rinsing twice daily with TCP has been a miracle cure. It tastes disgusting but it's so worth it not to have any mouth ulcers!

If they are recurring then get your GP to check for immune system diseases such as Lupus or Behcets Disease. There are other symptoms for these but they may appear unrelated.
If they are really serious then see if you can get go to prescribe a steroid inhaler but just use it in the mouth instead of actually inhaling if you know what I mean or a course of prednisone.
