How do you get rid of a stye?

My dd has had a angry looking stye on her eye for about 10 days now and it looks awful as well as being a bit painful. I have tried Golden Eye ointment but it seems to make no difference. So does anyone have any old wives tales or even practical suugestions as to how to get rid of it? Are they contagious as one of her friends at nursery has had styes on both his eyes for ages?

An old wives tale is to rub it with a gold wedding ring.

Absolutely no faith in it working, but you could try!

Try washing it over with salted water.

Hot compresses on it for as long as she'll stand it, as many times a day as you can manage. It's the only cure.

I think the bacteria that causes them is probably contagious - usually they start in an eyelash follicle - if you can find the eyelash and pull it out (clean fingers!) the pus will probably follow, then just clean with boiled water.

I always pop them and i dont seem to get any more because of it and i normally only get them when i war my contacts or if i havent been looking after myself well enough.
