ds (1yr old next week) just fell down 2 (I think) stairs onto a limestone floor. huuuge purple lump on forehead and lots of tears. think he's ok but am getting him checked out by our gp later.

a teeny bit of irony - i bought a stair gate yesterday but didn't have time to put it up last night as we were having a first aid course on resuscitation . tonight it will go up...

Oh, the first one is quite upsetting, isn't it. DS2's forehead constantly looks like a little party of bruises and bumps.

The general rule is, if they don't throw up or pass out, particularly if they start crying right away, then they're fine.

Yep I'm sure he'll be fine, and I'm sure I have many more of those oh-shit-what-just-happened moments ahead.

The thing is: even though I know about the unconsciousness/vomitting thing, there was still this little voice in the back of my head saying "ooh he doesn't seem himself does he? a bit pale? a bit unresponsive?".

Typical that ILs are here this weekend - just when the bruise will be coming out at its shiniest best...

just keep an eye, if he gets very sleepy (more so than normal) or is sick then take him to A&E or the GP. ds managed to pull a portal TV on his head - blood everywhere, dp rushed him to A&E where he bounced around (blood soaked)and generally made a nuscience of himself...nice scar....

Mine have usually done this type of thing just before bedtime. So they are sleepy anyway and it's difficult to put them to bed not knowing whether it's the normal sleepy or the concussion sleepy. We end up keeping them up until they have had something to eat/drink, not thrown up, no leaks of anything from their nose or ears and by that time they are running around not a care in the world.
Read somewhere that it is more dangerous if the lump or bruising doesn't appear after a bump to the head as it means it could be swelling under the skull - which is definitely not good.

Keep in mind as well that as the blood drains out of the bruise in the next few days he might end up with black eyes. I remember DS banging his head on the table leg, great big bump but he seemed fine, 2 days later the whole of the top of his face was bruised, obviously we panicked until the doctor said it was only the blood draining away, felt a bit silly on the way home!
