Should I panic yet?

OP posts:
Enid · 09/05/2006 16:56

ring nhs direct and give him some calpol

starlover · 09/05/2006 16:56

any other symptoms?

how old is he?

tbh i'd take him to a&e, because it's better to be safe than sorry. and they'd rather see a child with nothing wrong with them than not see one who is very ill.

starlover · 09/05/2006 16:56

have you given calpol? and has it helped?

HunKeRMunKeR · 09/05/2006 16:57

Strip him to nappy/pants (how old is he?) and check him for a rash, how is he with light, do as Enid said.

bundle · 09/05/2006 16:58

can he put his chin onto his chest? please don't panic.

busybusybee · 09/05/2006 17:00

He has been ill for a couple of days already.
When he went to bed on sunday he obviously wasnt well. ate no supper.
He vomited at midnight and 1am. And at 6am monday
He had nothing to eat all day yesterday - but still vomited at 2pm - 2 hours after drinking some water

All he has eaten today is a few mouthfuls of dry cereal.
He has been really hot for two days - (It is warm here anyway for a change!!!!) He have just checked his temperature with a forehead thingy - 39 -40 ish

He says his neck hurts - which could be because he was sitting funny on the sofa watching tv - I told him bed would be more comfortable, of course he wouldnt listen

He is lying on his bed now refusing to sleep because "it isnt bedtime"

busybusybee · 09/05/2006 17:02

Ermmm - his eye lids are purple - look awful tbh
Seems ok with light

But cant bear me to touch him at all

No spots/rash at all

starlover · 09/05/2006 17:03

i think that nhs direct will say take him to a&e tbh... just in case.

i'd definitely take him.

Esmummy · 09/05/2006 17:03

Could possibly be ear infection ? DD had all these symptoms about 6 months ago and i was absolutely terrified. Turned out she had burst both of her ear drums :(

foxinsocks · 09/05/2006 17:03

is he having lots of fluids? anything, even ice lollies

if his neck hurts and he's not himself I'd take him to the doc

noddyholder · 09/05/2006 17:04

Take him to A&E

bundle · 09/05/2006 17:04

could you tempt him with an ice lolly or ice cream? (to cool him a little and get some fluids in)

busybusybee · 09/05/2006 17:07

Oh help - I cant just take him to a&e

We live in a rural area - H has gone out (work related, though he could have turned it down) He wont be back till 11.30pm.
I dont drive

Finding an alternative way of getting there will be mega difficult

Thankyou for your replies - It helps but I dont know what to do!!!!

OP posts:
bundle · 09/05/2006 17:07

ring the emergency/out of hours dr and explain that you have no transport. they will come & see if you if there is no other option.

Enid · 09/05/2006 17:08

no friend with car?

busybusybee · 09/05/2006 17:09

He has had drinks - will try to get him to have more

He seems to be going to sleep now - Now that I have left the room, when I was in there with him he wasnt listening to me, he got upset, I got upset. I decided to leave him be

I will try to get him to drink more now

foxinsocks · 09/05/2006 17:09

agree with bundle - call your doctor's surgery and explain the situation. They may ask you to get a taxi to them.

Carmenere · 09/05/2006 17:10

Ring your dh and tell him to come home

busybusybee · 09/05/2006 17:11

Do you really think its that serious??

Up until an hour ago I just thought it was his his tummy - he does get a sicky tummy quite a lot tbh

Bundle - Ill try your idea about an oncall doc

Thanks

bundle · 09/05/2006 17:12

have you given calpol? take temp 20 mins after giving it, tell surgery that it's not come down (if it hasn't) and that he has a sore neck and any other symptoms.

busybusybee · 09/05/2006 21:01

Hello All - Thankyou so much for the advice - Just typing out his symptoms helped me to calm down!

He went to sleep twice and woke up twice between 5 and 6.30 - then woke up, demanded a bath and a story and has now gone back to sleep

Phew! I gave him some calpol and by 7 his temp was back down to 38 so hopefully he will be alright now.

mixedemotions123 · 10/05/2006 07:28

One of the other things that are of major concern is if the temp is very high, but hands and feet are icy. I always remember that as my son had meningitis when he was a baby. The hospital told us that this can be a major symptom although it doesn't always mean its meningitus obviously iyswim. Hope he feels better soon. If you notice these symptoms, together with not wanting to be touched, personally I would call an ambulance. Don't mean to scare you uneccasarily but as I am sure has been said before, it is better to be safe than sorry.

amyjade · 10/05/2006 09:26

Agree with mixedemotions, any child with symptoms like these i would take straight to GP or A&E.
Another extremely important thing is that just because there is no rash doesn't mean it isn't Meningitis.

How is he this morning busybusybee?

busybusybee · 10/05/2006 21:36

Update Update!

We took ds to the docs today - It took lots of persauding as he didnt want to go out

Doc said he has a respiratory tract infection. Ears, throat, glands under his chin, eyes

The works basically - in addition to vomiting on his bed five times - Arggggggggggggh!

Doc gave us a perscription for penicillin - 3 times a day for 5 days

Thankyou all for your help and reassurance - It helps so much to know someone is listening! Sorry not to have immediately responded to the advice to take him to the docs Blush

OP posts:
mixedemotions123 · 11/05/2006 07:38

oh bless him, hopefully the penicillin will kick in soon. At least you can put your mind at rest. Amyjade you are right, my son didn't show any rash at all with his meningitis.
