might find this \link{http://observer.guardian.co.uk/woman/story/0,,1747445,00.html\ article interesting}

I'm always a bit sceptical of media and memoirs and health, but does anybody else have an experience of 5 HTP?

dont know a huge amount about it, other than it helps raise serotonin ("the happy chemical") in the brain and so helps with depression. Patrick Holford from Higher Nature and the Institute of Optimum Nutrition talks a lot about it, he usually gives very good advice and usually backs up any remedies with lots of advice on which foods to each to help your problem as well. If you can find his website it will probably have a lot more info on 5HTP.

st john's wort (a natural remedy) is supposed to be very good for depression. the only problem being that you can't take it if you're on the pill as it can affect the pill's effectiveness

very interested. i did a lot of reading around dietary deficiencies and depression a couple of years ago, but never got around to trying anything as i was on the pill at the time . i'm now using another form of contraception so i'm going to give the 'other stuff' a try. I skimmed the article and going back to read it properly a bit later, it seems very relevant to me
