Hair Falling Out - Starting to really worry. Any advice?

Hi there,

My DS is now approaching the six month mark and since he was 3/4 months my hair has been falling out! It's at it's worse when I'm in the shower or brushing/blow drying it but throughout the day I'm aware of it falling out and being on my clothes and even see hairs all over the floors of my house despite very regular vacuuming.

I'm really starting to panic! I asked my GP about it at a routine check up and she said not to worry and that it was due to the stress of my son's delivery and would eventually stop. That was almost 3 months ago and it's falling out as prolifically now as it was then. It is significantly thinner than it used to be and I've already trimmed a good 3 inches off to improve the appearance and help it grow back thicker but it doesn't seem to have made a massive difference to how much thinner my hair looks.

Has anyone else experienced this? And if so how long did it last? Any help very welcome :)

its very normal to lose hair after childbirth and is more to do with hormones than stress of childbirth. When you are pregnant you lose very little hair so when you give birth you lose all the excess hair that built up during the pregnancy. My hair loss was terrible after I had dd and I would find it everywhere (even in her nappy!). It did stop eventually.

Thank you, that's good to know. Thank you for the links as well. Fingers crossed it will stop eventually :)

Consider having your iron levels checked as well, not uncommon to become anaemic after having children. It's not to do with stress though...

Hair loss and weight gain when my ds was 6 months old, were the two things that led to my Dx of an under active thyroid, seems to be quite a common thing to happen after childbirth.its easily checked.
