Tonsillitis - viral or bacterial?

I'm pretty sure I have tonsillitis - very red swollen looking tonsils with white lumps and painful to talk and swallow. I've had it full on for three days now and have been taking paracetamol and nurofen and strepsils and gargling with antiseptic mouthwash. Taking Vit C supplements too. I am hoping that this will just go on its own if its viral but I just read (Dr Google) that if it is a bacterial infection then I will need antibiotics to shift it. The thing is I start a new job on Monday and cant get an evening docs appointment till next Friday! What else can I do? How long will it last? Help!

Phone your out of hours service. If you've had pus for three days they may want to have a look.

Use a throat spray like Corvonia which numbs and is antibacterial.

Not really any advice but want to say you have my up most sympathy. I'm on day 6 of tonsillitis and only went to my doctor yesterday who gave me anti biotics for bacterial. I'd get yourself to the docs if you can. I'm starting to feel like I'm picking up which I'm putting down to the anti biotics. If it wasn't for them I think of still be in lots of pain and I've already noticed a decrease on the beautiful white gunk.

Hope you feel better soon

Thanks for the replies. I'll perhaps try to go to the walk-in centre over the weekend then. Bleurgh - why do these things always happen at the most inconvenient time?!
