I have had a really bad chesty cough for almost 3 weeks now. I have been to the doctors twice, got told its probably a virus and i can have it up to 3 weeks.I have some low dose antibiotics that i started Monday that have shown NO signs of doing anything yet.

Thing is, its getting really violent now to the point now where when i start coughing i cant stop, even making me wretch.

Im worried beause when i cough all my stomach mucscles tense up - im 29 weeks pregnant. The sides of my stomach are really hurting now every time i cough and im worried its causing distress to the baby because of the squeezing of my stomach muscles.

Has anybeen had this? any ideas how to get rid? and does anyone think it could be distressing the baby?

When I was pg with dd, I came down with a really bad cold and developed a cough similar to yours. I was about 23weeks.
It took 8 weeks for mine to go (but was not given any antibiotics)
I coughed till I threw up and the mucus was thick and green ( sorry if too much info)

My stomach muscles were sore from the coughing, but baby was fine.
If you are worried, go speak to your midwife.
And as for the cough, if you're already on antib, then I'm afraid it's just going to have to run its course. It will get better, but takes a long time if you're pg, as immune system is not so strong.

(Try to hock up any gunk after you cough-less green stuff inside, the better)
Hope you feel better soon

thank you for the advice, makes me feel better knowing someone else has had this and all was fine. just spoke to the midwife, she said the cough wont hurt the baby. just worrying myself i think as i havent exactly had a smooth pregnancy. cant wait to get to the end and be able to see whats going on with the baby instead of imagine it. Thanks

If the antibs aren't working, then you need to go back to the Dr. DH has a chest infection that has had to try 3 different ones to shift it.

The baby will be fine though - they are very resilient, and the fluid cushions them from everything

Have had a bad case of coughs earlier this winter that did not want to go away. Hope you are taking plenty of hot fluids and staying away from anything that aggravates it such as toast/biscuits etc. I found high gelatin food soothed it, not everyone's cup of tea but sheep hoof & feet were great, not too bad with some lemon on them.

Also dark chocolate is supposed to be great and worked with our 7 yr DD

Thanks, i have found that honey and hot water have helped sooth it alot and prevented me coughing for a couple of hours which is nice :) i will go back next week if it doesnt shift over the weekend, it will be 7 days of antibiotics then.

just do not smell it just heat up stirr it and drink 2-3 times per day
