Anyone had an op for hip impingement?

Saw the consultant a month ago and he suspects I have hip impingement in both hips and a labral tear in the cartilage in my right hip.

Had my CT scan today, ultrasound and MRI on Tuesday.

If results are as he suspects I'll need an op in both hips.

Anyone had hip impingement surgery? What's the recovery like? Scared as apart from having DC, I've never needed hospital treatment in my life. Never

Not hip impingement, but had this surgery on my shoulder and thought I would share. In all honesty it was fine- I had to do lots of physio afterwards which was the most tedious bit- but totally worth it. This was my first operation ever as well, but really was nothing to be scared of. I had the option of being awake or sedated- I took the latter. My worse part was the morphine they gave me after- I was high as a kite! I'd ask for different pain relief if I had to have any other op again.

Hope someone else comes along who has had this on their hip, but hope this helps in the mean time!

Thanks sausagedog that's always helpful to hear success stories. I have another friend who had success with her shoulder surgery. I don't think I have the option of sedation and to be honest I want to be totally out for the count when they dislocate my hip!

Not sure what hip impingement is. Fwiw I had a hip replacement last year which was a shock. It went well and recovery was textbook. I was 40. Good luck.

Oh and I had a general which was fine. Worst thing was appalling constipation on day 3. I was begging male nurse (clearly gay!) to give me a supositary to sort out the blockage!!

I had keyhole surgery for Femoroacetabular Impingement (I think I spelled that correctly) 3 years ago. The surgery went well and the recovery was much quicker than expected. They suggested 6-8 weeks on crutches and no driving for a couple of months. I was walking without crutches after a couple of weeks and was driving within a month. The scarring was negligible - I just have two circular scars on the top of my thigh and only my closest friends get to see that part of me.

I have to say, it hasn't solved my problems, but it is better than it was. They discovered I had no labrum left during surgery which is probably why I still have pain! They have suggested further surgery to replace the labrum, but I'm putting it off!

That's really interesting TwoGood. That's the same surgery I think I need. I can't believe driving is out for a month, that's really going to bugger things up as no one I know can help out with the school run.

I guess I'll know more once I've seen the consultant in may when MRI and CT results are back. Not looking forward to the injection into the joint tomorrow. Urgh. I hate getting old!

I need surgery in both hips. The consultant wants to operate on my right hip first, as it has the tear in the cartilage, but my left is worse as it 'goes' all the time (very similar to miranda falling over for no reason!) and really aches by the end of the day. Will definitely wait for op until after camping in July for two weeks. I guess air beds are not great for recuperation...

Should I have had a Brazillian before hand! Not sure whether they shave you in theatre and would obviously prefer to do it myself if I have to....!

DH and I both have this problem and have both turned down the surgery. We've never been able to work out how we could cope if either of us had it!

He copes with his by taking painkillers before exercise. My pain altered (improved really) with two pregnancies, although I know the problem is still there. I haven't had the giving way thing since first pregnancy.

I think I 'tidied up' a bit. They put me in paper pants, but I didn't have them on when I came round, so they do see your topiary (so to speak ). But the scars for me are on the front and outside of my thigh, so I don't think you would need to be shaved unless they will come in at a different angle for your procedure.

I had key hole FAI surgery in June last year. The surgeon re shaped my femur head and repaired my labrum (which was torn as a result of the impingement). I had been in severe pain for 2 years by the time I was opperated on and taking 8 co-codymol, 8 tramadol, 4 ibuprofen and 2 amiltriptyline a day which still only reduced the pain to bearable ( just). My back was in a bad way by then and I had sciatica.
Within 2 weeks of the op I had reduced my pain relief dramatically. Please remember to take anti-inflammatorys for longer than you think you need too.

With regard to the actual op, I had a bikini wax a week before as usual and that was fine. Do be prepared for some swelling in between your legs as the post they pull against to dislocate is their!!! The general was fine only the second time I'd had one (the other was for wisdom teeth). I was discharged the next day and only had 3 weeks off work although I should have waited another week. I could drive short distances by 2-3 weeks. HTH

I also had this op 18 months ago . Mine was a bit more complex in the end because when they got inside my hip they found that the impingement had worn away the cartilage on the inside of the socket so I had micro abrasion ( think that's what it's called) basically they drill lots of holes in the bare patch to generate some scar tissue to substitute for cartilage . All of the above meant I ended up with 6 weeks non weight bearing

In the end I have bought time before I have to have a hip replacement .Its not perfect but I have seen the pics of my hip and it was a mess.

The surgeon said the same to me. Of I don't get this done, I'm basically looking at hip replacements in 10 years time. This will buy me time!

Had my MRI today. Wasn't as bad as I thought, though not nice. The worst bit was the injection into the joint that they had to do beforehand. The doc said I have really strong muscles (news to me as I'm not the most active person!) and they're large so I don't know if that's a good thing in relation to my recovery. We'll see.

Appointment with my surgeon is in May so fingers crossed. I hope he acknowledges that my left hip is f*cked too as he seems preoccupied with my right and that's the one that bothers me least.

I'm not usually one for relighting old threads but was wondering how the op when OP? I have just received the date for my consultation with my surgeon after being diagnosed with minor hip impingement to my left hip. Just wondering how long it was between meeting your surgeon and the surgery, and how was your recovery time? I have just started a new job on a zero hours contract so as i'm on 'probabtion' for the next 3 months if the surgery is soon-ish it could mean I lose my job! My boss is away atm so am going to talk to her next week but it would be handy if I had some info on timings to hand, although I know they may vary between areas obviously! Thanks.
