Period is 8 days early - is this a sign of menopause?

My periods seem to be getting closer and closer together and i'm concerned that this is a sign of menopause. I'm 41 this year - and still very broody. Does anyone know anything about the early signs of menopause please? Thanks

Hmm. I would have thought you wouldn't get them as frequently?

When did your mother menopause?

juuule · 04/05/2006 20:28

Might be, might not be. There are usually other signs too.

gives a list of symptoms and descriptions that might help.

I am the same age Chocol8 and my periods are getting closer together. I have had some other symptoms though so I had a hormone test done and I am apparently not yet nearing the menopause (based on hormone levels) so your symptoms alone are not conclusive.

It is horrible waiting and looking for the signs though isn't it?

my periods are getting erratic too and i am 39

Regarding the tests - I was told not to have them yet as the hormones can fluctuate so much that one month they may be in normal range and the next month totally off the wall. So you would have to 'catch' a month where they would register out of range. This is more likely to happen the closer you are to menopause(last period) itself and not as likely in the early years of perimenopause.

Oh great! Just when I thought I was in the clear! Although, my sister is 5 years older than me and she is in the pre menopause stage and she definitely experiences long gaps without periods rather than the other way around.

Thanks for the info and for the link - from the list of symptoms, it looks very possible. I couldn't find any info at 4.30 this morning when I was woken with the pain - but then I wasn't thinking straight.

My sister tells me that my Mum started her menopause when she was 45 but was still having periods til she was 52. I only started when I was 16, so quite late really although my periods have always been a nightmare.

Prior to each period - and more so lately, I am overly sensitive, easily angered, I have boobs like Pammy that I literally have to carry around as they are so painful. The consultant said that my blood count is 25% below what it should be and I bleed and clot heavily every month.

I may ask for a hormone test though, thanks for that.

I am 49 ( soon) have had a Mirena for 2.5 years and had it removed three months ago.I feel so much better, but, I thought I wouldn't be having any more periods, as I haven't had any since having the Mirena.

Fat chance, I must be so boringly normal. I have had three, exactly a month apart, and they are just as heavy as before the Mirena, shows it worked though!

Interesting!! Last month my period was a week early & lasted 8 days instead of usual 3. I'm 41 this year aswell. Did wonder if this was the start of menopause but on checking that chart i don't have any other symptoms (yet).
