please remind me of the tests tho do?

OP posts:
chapsmum · 04/05/2006 18:02

they will check his reflexes and power in his arms and legs. they will also check his vision memory speach and swollow reflex.
If he has an ongoing weakness, he will be get a CT/MRI of his brain.
The will do some blood tests to check his clotting and the fats in his blood as well as all the normal salts minerals and blood cells.
Sorry to hear this misdee how bad is it?
If it has resolved and everything appears normal again he may not have an CT but be referred to the transian Ischaemic Attack (TIA) clinic who will see him as an outpatient to investigate further.

my friends mum had a suspected stroke the other week and she did seem a little different for a few days. BUt after a week in hispital they were happy she hadnt and let her out. She's fine now. Why do you think he may have had a stroke?

misdee · 04/05/2006 18:06

my mum thinks it happened about 4 weeks ago. she says his face has 'dropped' i thought he just looked tired. he is having problems with his vision, my mum has mentioend his speech is off as well. he has been having awful headaches the last few weeks.

he has been admitted to MAU atm. just waiting for news.

Oh misdee, you are getting it all this week honey!! Sorry I can't help but just wanted to say hi and my best to you x.

jampots · 04/05/2006 18:07

and he hasnt seen a doctor in the last 4 weeks? surely thats madness.

Another alternative of course could be Bells Palsy?

misdee · 04/05/2006 18:09

tbh, i am not all that worried. Peter had a stroke late last year and its affected his eyesight, but i have learnt not to get all panic0-y, which is awful i know. my other sister called a while ago and said the docs were there discusiing what tests to do.

if he has had one, he will probably be on blood-thinners wont he?

misdee · 04/05/2006 18:10

jampots, you dont know my dad, he is a bit stubborn at times, and wont go to the docs. i think my mum forced him to go. I know he has been worried lately as he is coming upto the age his parents died, his mum died from a massive stroke i think.

My mum had a mini-stroke on a stretcher on a plane back from Italy where she had broken her leg on the second day of her holiday (great holiday...). Nobody diagnosed it as such for a couple of days though. Afterwards for a few days she had probs making sense (kept calling objects by wrong names etc). Anyway if it's any reassurance she is absolutely fine now, back to completely normal, on pills to thin her blood, and I think this is pretty usual after a TIA.

chapsmum · 04/05/2006 18:20

Misdee, it will deend on the type of sroke he has had.
Some stokes are caused by bleeds, other are caused by or narrowing of the arteries in the brain or clots there are a few more less commn causes.
If it has indeed been a clot, he will probably be put on blood thinners

misdee · 04/05/2006 18:23

he was also on medication for 4 weeks for a different problem, and he thoight the headaches were due to them.

OP posts:
chapsmum · 04/05/2006 18:24

what medication was that if yo dont mind me asking

misdee · 04/05/2006 18:28

i dont know. he had an infection after an op.

OP posts:
chapsmum · 04/05/2006 18:31

any operations can make you more prone to developing blood clots

SparklyGothKat · 04/05/2006 20:17

Mum just phoned me, apparently they have been looking deep into his eyes, and asking if anyone in the family has had cancer.. am really scared now :(

misdee · 04/05/2006 20:25
Sad

wait till the scan tomorrow mieow.

OP posts:
chapsmum · 04/05/2006 22:14

they will be looking in his eyes to see if there is any sign of bleeding or raised pressure in the head (this is visable at the back of the eye)
THe questions about cancer are very standard, please try not to worry.

SparklyGothKat · 04/05/2006 22:16

he is having a CAT scan at 10am tomorrow, so we will know what is going on then.

chapsmum · 04/05/2006 22:17

Misdee my dp had one about six months ago and he is absolutely fine now. Just take extra good care of him for a while and make sure he takes it easy and eats well and does everything the doc says.
