Hi, I suddenly experienced pain and swellin in my hands two weeks ago it was so bad that I went to A & E the Dr suggested Carpel Tunnel and gave me Napoxalin which helped ... I went to see my own Gp who ran some bloods and thank goodness came back normal however she said my platelets are slightly high but she's not concerned sorry to sound stupid but I can't remember if she said it was 160 or 260 instead of 250 or 150 I really stupidly wan't taking it in...
The symptoms in my hands has improved greatly although my index finger and middle finger on my left hand still tingle on the tips but my right hand is back to normal no pain is this normal with Carpel? does it flair up or is the pain all the time? I'm worried about my platelets and my hands can anyone advise please? x

I had it really bad 30 years ago, when I gave up work to become a housewife and was scrubbing an old filthy oven every day.

I was not given a blood test only an x-ray. Since then it does have flare ups depending on how much I have burdened it, and during the night when I burden it again sleeping in an odd position on it.

My pain disappeared quickly by shaking the hand and leaving it dangling down so blood could get to tips of fingers.

I ran a check because I wasn't certain, but all the numbers you are quoting for platelets are in the normal range and actually towards the bottom end.
Carpal tunnel I had all the stuff pain killers, steriod injections etc ultimately only the surgery worked and since then it has been great.

Thankyou for your replies.. My symptoms suddenly started , Last night was the first night that I actually got some sleep without being woken with pins and needles in my fingers the night before I wore splints but couldn't sleep their so uncomfortable.. I now have to wait up to 8 weeks to see a specialist my right hand feel's great but the left still doesnt't feel right on the index and middle finger I have been doing gentle exercises.. I hope that this isn't the start of things to come someone said the pain can be intermittant :(... Thankyou for your reassuarnce of my platelets Lonecatwithkitten, my Dr is very nice but she worried me when she said it was slightly elevated my mum has a blood condition & is on blood thinning tablets so it has been on my mind..
I'm pleased that the op worked for you did your condition progress over time?

My condition was traumatically induced when I damage the tendon covering the carpal tunnel delivering a calf by c-section. I know of several people who have had this surgery and by far and away the best outcome seems to insist in seeing a specialist hand surgeon rather than neuro or general orthopaedics. I did this yes my surgery was bigger than most people's, but I have had no ongoing problems.

I looked up about platelets, and got conflicting theories. My last blood test showed they were just on the minimum, and was told they should be higher and take zinc supplements. But couldn't remember the accepted ranges, but do remember it was a very wide range and thought that strange.

Too few and can be sign of them sticking together and adhering to the walls of the arteries. I certainly clot easily when I gash myself every year from my many climbing roses.

I don't understand what's normal Digerd, I'm worried about that & Carpel Tunnel at the moment my hands are ok apart from very slight tingling in the index and middle finger of my left hand... Does Carpel start like this then progressively get worse or can it stabilise?

When I checked the other day the UK ranges were 140 to 400.

These figures are confusing, I'm going back to see my doctor next Tuesday so I'm going to ask but thankyou hun...
My hands are worrying me as they feel fine apart from the two finger tips on my left hand the index finger really aches apart from that my right one is fine.. Is this Carpel Tunnel? I really don't know ..

I had carpal tunnel problems until recently - dead hand at nighttime and tingling numbness in hands. I found wearing a splint at night helped enormously, so maybe try and persevere with the splints, Carmen? You get used to them after a few nights.
I was referrred for a nerve conduction test which I had last week, but as I feel the problem has now resolved itself, it will be interesting to see what the results show.

Thankyou for your reply Nanthewiser, my hand doesn't go numb but just tingling and achy on the tips of my fingers, some nights I wake up with tingling in both hands but the pins and needles have stopped they only lasted a couple of nights.. It's very strange that a couple of weeks ago both hands swelled up and the pain was agonising I took the antiflammatories the swellng went down then I had the numbness pins and needles for a couple of nights and now my right hand is fine but the index and middle finger on my left is still painful it usually feel's a bit better throughout the day. My Dr says Carpel Tunnel but I'm wondering if it is that or something else as that same weekend all my joints hurt terribly my knees ,ankles and toes I was hobbling around like an old woman my legs are fine now thank goodness but I am worried , 8 weeks to see a specialist is a long time ..

The first time I experienced anything, I woke up and my hand and fingers felt numb, but suddenly my middle finger went crazy with red hot pain as the blood flow or nerves were getting back to normal.
Decades on and that finger is swollen with arthritis now. But the rest of my joints were fine at that time.
