Slight blurring in central vision in one eye after close work?

I'm learning to crochet and have been looking at online tutorials. Have begun to notice that after a period of crocheting (not much just a few minutes) when I look back at the computer screen to read the instructions, right where I am reading ie. slap bang in the middle of my vision, there is a blurring. At first I've thought it was a smudge on my glasses, or even a finger-print on the screen but it isn't. It's as if I've "burnt out" my central vision through concentrating very hard on a small area of close-up work. It's reminded me that I had a similar visual disturbance when I was doing some beading work a few months ago but I didn't notice so much because I wasn't looking at the written word immediately afterwards just sensed what felt like a large floater in my vision.

This central blurring goes after a while (although I am experiencing it now because I have just done a few rows of crochet).

I am short-sighted and have been wearing vari-focals for a few months (which I am not sure about and might switch to single vision lenses again) I will head to the opticians on Monday but just wondered if anyone else had experienced this. I am in my mid-40s BTW.

You should first make an appt with your optician. Emphasise that it is your central vision. Also have the drops put into your eyes and examined. ASAP.

Yes, am going to get myself along to an optician tomorrow. Central vision fine at the moment because I haven't done any close work. It's very odd. Thanks Digerd and the person who PM-ed Smile

Went to Specsavers and had a full eye examination (peripheral vision test, photo of both eyes, glaucoma air-puff thing, shiny light in the eye etc.) Nothing abnormal to be seen, no sign of glaucoma or cataracts, nothing untoward in the macular region. I've ditched the idea of vari-focals and have ordered up distance and reading glasses. There was an increase in my distance prescription and a very slight change in my close-up sight.

I described my problem and the temporary blurring in my central vision and the optician said it was just a problem with my eye adjusting from very up-close work to middle distance reading. When I asked why, she just said that's the way it is basically.

So something I just have to live with. It's very annoying though and makes reading crochet patterns a pain in the arse. Typical that I start getting into crafty things like crochet and sewing when my eyes are basically shagged due to "old age" (I'm only 45 FGS!)
