Tonsillitis - I'm swallowing razor blades - is there anything else I can try?

I seem to have become immune to painkilelrs in my old age.

2 Nurofen and a max strength lemsip was just about taking the edge off it.

Been to Dr, have antibiotics and recommendation to gargle with aspirin, which I have done, and swallowed them, which has done sweet FA.

My ears are hurting and swallowing anything - even saliva - is agony. Was awake at 5am with the pain.

Anything else I can try, or am I being a wimp?

Go & get some spray from the chemist. Not sure if you can get Difflam over the counter but you can deffo get Vicks chloraseptic spray.
Ask the chemist for stronger painkillers too. You should be able to get some paracetamol with codeine over the counter & get max strength ibuprofen too, not just the wimpy 200mg ones.
Don't take anymore lemsip as it contains decongestant which will dry you out & you need moisture to lubricate your tonsils.

FrayedKnot · 02/05/2006 11:41

Thanks for that Bugsy2. Didn't appreciate about teh decongestant aspect.

Have been to chemist once today so better go to a different one otehrwise they will think I'm a junkie!

Eat ice chips with some honey drizled over them can help to numb and lubricate a sore throar.

LIZS · 02/05/2006 11:45

You poor thing. Try lozenges like Merocaine or Dequacaine which have a local anaethestheic and anti bacterial effect.

bluejelly · 02/05/2006 11:47

I used to get tonisilitis really badly. Awful. You poor thing.
Antibiotics will kick in by tomorrow. The only thing I can suggest is lots of painkillers and ice-cream.

littlelamb · 02/05/2006 11:50

I seem to have chronic tonsillitus and the only thing that has worked for me is aspirin and merociane (a true wonder drug :) ). Also, without wanting to be disgusting, when I had my worst case ever, my throat was so swollen I couldn't swallow anything, so I had to spit into a cup, which might be worth a try just to ease the pain of any swallowing. I would have to say that if possible, go to bed in a dark room, with a hot water bottle, and a hat over your sore ears and get some kindly person to bring you ice lollies every now and then. Hope you are feeling better soon x

orangina · 02/05/2006 11:51

Sad augh, I feel for you, it is MISERY.....! So glad you have the anti-biotics, I find they are the only thing that really work, and they do kick in quickly. Could you ask your doctor if you can double the 1st dose? Otherwise icecream might help.... hope you get better soon, you have all my sympathy....

SparklyGothKat · 02/05/2006 11:53

this taste foul but does work, mix cider vinegar and honey, put in some hot water (from kettle) and drink it. It is nasty tasting, but I get Tonsillitis quite regularly and this helps my throat.

LOL at myself. I read ice chips covered in honey and was trying to visualise a bowl of frozen McCain's oven chips in a bowl covered in honey. Was sat here wondering how that would help. Blush Blush doh! I'd never make a nurse. Smile

LeahE · 02/05/2006 12:08

Dequacaine's the best thing I've tried, although I do tend to chain-suck them which I'm fairly sure isn't recommended.

throckenholt · 02/05/2006 12:09

hot honey and lemon works well.

anything hot or cold is supposed to help - hot soothes and cold numbs.

I alternated paracetemol and ibuprofen when I had it a few months back (had earache in both ears at the same time - yuk !)

DumbledoresGirl · 02/05/2006 12:22

Buy some good old fashioned soluble aspirin and drop in some water. Then gargle it. Sounds odd maybe but I had dreadful tonsilitus once and it does help with the pain.

Thank you everyone!

I like teh icecream idea. Sparkly, I will try that later.

Littlelamb I was spitting yesterday, revolting as it may sound.

Just off to get DS from nursery (at least I've had the morning off!), feel a bit better now but mornings and evening are the worst.

Thanks again for all these ideas.

frayedknot
try gargling dissovable aspirin
apparently it works

Squarer · 02/05/2006 12:49

Deffo gargling aspirin. Also the chloraseptic spray. Also, try squeezig the juice of a lemon into a mug, topping up with boiling water and adding honey to taste. This eases things and is great to take paracetomol with (homemade Lemsip without the shite!)
Hope you feel better soon Smile - it really is miserable.

poppiesinaline · 02/05/2006 13:11

Poor U FrayedKnot. Tonsillitis is horrible. Another vote for Dequadine. Fab stuff. Just keep thinking to yourself that the antibiotics will kick in soon and this time tomorrow you will be feeling a bit better.

PMSL at the frozen chips! Sparkler1! I was sitting here thinking the same. 'mmmm interesting thought. Frozen oven chips in honey for tonsillitis - never heard of that one' Blush

MrsWednesday · 02/05/2006 13:15

Sympathies, I had it last week and swallowing razor blades is a good description. Everyone else has given loads of good advice - the one thing I'd say is it might be better to stay away from ice cream and other dairy stuff as it can make your saliva a bit mucousy/sticky which makes it even harder to swallow. Yuck, sorry. Hope you feel better soon.

Northerner · 02/05/2006 13:17

Ooh, I feel for you I really do. I had is so bad once it developed into Quincy (sp?) and I was admitted to hospital for 28 hours. I was dehydrated as I couldn't bear to sip water and had been spitting out my salive to avoid swallowing.

Hope you feel better soon Sad

PrincessPeaHead · 02/05/2006 13:19

Have you got white pustules (sorry!) at the back of your throat? If so, and at the risk of sounding truly gross (those of a sensitive nature look away now), you can attack them with a qtip to sort of clean them out, and then gargle with a salt water wash or that really good oral antiseptic mouthwash - Corsodyl, that's it. Takes a while to get past the gag reflex but then it is strangely satisfying getting all the gunk out on qtips and it makes the healing process much faster.
Can you tell I get tonsillitis a lot?!!

Also the antibiotics do kick in very fast normally, you should be feeling MUCH better tomorrow and pretty much OK by Thursday. Good luck!

LeahE · 02/05/2006 14:41

I agree with Northerner -- my sister had quinsy twice (or might actually have been three times, now I come to think about it) and ended up admitted to hospital where they sprayed cocaine (!) on her throat for local anaesthetic. Probably not a good idea for self-medication, that one, though...

Eventually they gave in and took her tonsils out, since when no more problems.
