Not TTC - severe ovulation pain.

Hi all,

I'm 32 yrs old, already had 3 kids, don't want any more now my youngest has been diagnosed with ASD.

However, in the last 2 years around the middle of the month I have really bad OV pains. Not every month which is a relief!!

However last night was definitely the worst so far to the point of feeling quite faint with the pain. I was fine once ibruprofen kicked in and it had gone by the time I woke up.

Please tell me I'm not the only one and what has helped you?

I currently don't take any contraceptive pills because I'm so rubbish at remembering to take them at the same time every day!

I would get severe mid cycle pain too. Awful, sharp pain that would have me doubled over and unable to walk.

Two years ago I agreed to try the mirena and after a few months 'settling down' I didn't have that mid cycle pain any more. I don't know if it is coincidence but it has helped.

Thanks Jest, how did it affect AF afterwards - because mine are also quite heavy mainly on day 2 of 5 and then normal.

I get this too, you have my sympathy. I guess any hormonal contraceptive that works by suppressing ov would help? Injection, implant?
For me, the pain seems to be connected to endometriosis, might that be a possibility for you?

I've never suffered with endometriosis before so wouldn't know what to compare it to but it literally only happens around OV time - AF's aren't painful at all - just heavy.

Pain mid cycle can be indicative of endometriosis.

Any pain that is cyclical in nature or gets worse up to and including menses should be evaluated further by a gynaecologist.

I would keep a daily pain and symptom diary until you receive an appointment with such a person.

I did a bit of digging about on this when I was ttc and having very intense ov pain. It has a name, mittlesmertz (or something like that!) which translates as 'middle pain'.

The reason you don't feel it every month is because you tend to alternate which 'side' you ovulate from. Do you feel it on both sides? I find it quite amusing that as a consequence I know my dd came from my right ovary and my DS the left.....

I was told by my fertility consultant that it occurs when the egg is released and the follicle ruptures, a tiny amount of blood seeps into the abdominal cavity. It's harmless but for some women, painful. The reason why some get it and some don't is unknown. He did also say you should rule out endo.

He said that the obvious solution if its a problem and you are not ttc is to use a contraception method which suppresses ovulation......

I was thinking some people would mention they were sterilised and although I don't want more kids I think I'm still too young to go down that "final" route yet!! Relieved there is a less severe answer

MN is gospel I have decided.
I had endo
I had horrendous ovulation pain and bloating
I have the Mirena coil and love it.
No symptoms any more.

I think it does vary the side it comes from although last night it just seemed to be all over the bottom part of my stomach and into my back - felt very familiar to the after pains after giving birth!
I'll see about keeping a diary as well
