Corneal abrasion - thanks to DS2

DS2 (2.5) decided to poke DS1 (7.5) right in the eye with his finger this morning. After a trip to A&E he's got antibiotic cream for a nasty scratch across his eyeball and eye clinic on Tuesday. He's in agony bless him, he looks like the elephant man and he can't sleep - anyone been through this and how long before it stops stinging? He's been crying in pain on and off all day

did they not give him any pain killers??

I know the antibiotic cream is just three times per day, but goe to the chemist tommorrow and get some lacrilube ( just a praifin based moisturiser for eyes). You can apply this as often as you like and it will keep his eye nice and lubricated and comfortable. It may sound strange but you can give him calpol or brufen to take the edge off.
I would say it can sting for a few days, but it can be uncomfortable for beyond a week. He will need lacralube after the ointment runs out.
Is he going back for a check up??

Aww Chapsmum - you sound in the know, are you a nurse? I will write that down and find a chemist tomorrow, I'll also see about getting a better painkiller too! He goes back to outpatients on Tuesday, I'm not sure what they do there though. (Thanks for your advice - I really appreciate it)

bubble, I would give hims some brufen too if he can take it. Put the chloramphenicol on last thing before he goes to bed, as his eyes will get dry during the night. and then re-apply first thing in the morning. Get some lacralube from the chemist and it should help to ease his discomfort. I would have his vision checked again in about a week, (hone your optition)just to make sure everything is healing up nicely.
You can get pain killers applied directly to the eye but most of them are not lisened for kid use and probably he would have to see an eye dr.
You may have an Eye a and e near you if your struggling....

I am, guilty as charged, glad they will see him on tuesdya, they willcheck his vision and have a wee look tomake sure the scrap is healling.

Fantastic - my Auntie specialised in eyes and she is the most squeamish person I know - I really hate even putting the cream on his lower lid - yuk!!

I will go and raid the medicine cupboard and see if we have any brufen left after the last round of tonsilitis - kids eh - the fun never ends

my daughter did that to my son he was in aGONY they gave us anaethetic drops which worked a treat - wore off after 4 hours but within minutes of being re droppered he was ok...wore an eye patch for 2 days ....

I hope your poor boy recovers soon - with both of us it was the younger hurting the older!!!

Apparantly it happened to my brother when he was little but it wasn't me, a balloon burst in his face and scratched his eye!

No problem, the anasthetic drops are called benoxinate. The aare fab, but not may places give them as a carry out, the danger is that he will poke himself in the eye and do further damage as they numb sensation as well as pain.
