Broken foot

Not me, but Mum.

She fell yesterday and broke the base of the 5th metatarsal. She has a backslab cast on and has been instructed not to put any weight on the foot at all, and has been given crutches.

The problem is, she had a hip replacement on the right hip a few years ago, and has broken the left foot. She has also had surgery on both hands for carpal tunnel. Mobilising on. Rut he's is very difficult. She's finding it hard to hop on the right leg due to the hip replacement and hard to use the crutches due to the carpal tunnel surgery.

So she's a bit stuck really!

The main problem is stairs. Any tips for getting up and down them?

I did the same thing a few years back. The only way that I could get up and down the stairs was to bump down on my bum and crawl up on my hands and knees.
I hope your mum's foot heals quickly, good luck to her.

Having had two similar injuries in the past two years myself, I second Ilovexmastime's advice, although I used to go up and downstairs on my backside. Blush

I assume she's got a follow-up at the fracture clinic and with any luck, they may give her an aircast walking boot, which she will be able to start bearing weight on in a couple of weeks, depending on precisely where and how bad the break is.

I was in an aircast for just shy of 10 weeks when I broke my 5th metatarsal at the base, the year before last. They're not easy to walk in at first but you do get used to it and it's so much easier than crutches.

I should have thought of that moosemama, I ended up with very sore knees!
