Why is my knee going crunch-crunch-crunch?

When I walk upstairs, as I put my weight on my right leg, as it bends it makes a small crunchy noise.

I am about a stone overweight and I've been jogging to exercise. Have I done myself a mischief? Is it worth getting it checked out by a doctor.

Possibly the cartilage in your knee has worn down?

Id get it checked but wouldn't be too worried.

I'd go and see your GP, in fact I did (well my GP anyway!) as my knees do this too. I was told I'd worn the cartilage away. There were some specific exercises to do to strengthen the muscles around the joint (can't remember them though) that were supposed to help. Mine isn't painful, just sounds like I'm falling apart. Has been like this since dd2 was tiny and she's nearly 13 now. It's not got much worse, did get a bit better when I lost a bit of weight (back now!) :)

It sounds like patello femeral syndrome. A physio will give you exercises & maybe orthotics for your shoes. I have this, they only operated in severe cases.

Crumbs, right, ok, thanks for all your replies. Will check with my doctor.

My knees have crunched and made grinding noises for years (about 25!). I am a bit fat overweight and also run. They don't hurt and I've never bothered getting anything done about them

The noise freaks other people out though so it's a good party trick

My knee crunches going up stairs - I did go to the gp as it started after I'd fallen over and hit that knee is a twisty way and she said it was just inflamed inside but to go back in a few months if it didn't settle. Which it hasn't tbh
