Priton - antihistamine and under 1

dd2 has a condition called mastocytosis the non scarey version, the dr at the hospital has prescribed priton for her for when it flares up - which it never does.

the rash is getting slowly worse.

do i give her some to see if it helps it generally? and also she doesn't sleep well, not sure if she is just not a good sleeper or if its the rash.

she's nearly 11 months and has had this for about 6months

anyone have experience of priton and young children

if she is 11months i would give her the 2.5mls dosage. dd3 had a reaction at about 9months old, to egg (she grabbed my food, i didnt give it to her) so i called the GP to ask what to do. they said to give 2mls.

its been prescribed for her but i'm really not sure about giving it since shes not in any discomfort, guess i'm looking for some reassureance

piriton is an antihistamine with a side effect of drowsiness. dd was prescribed it at 10months for eczema. They told me to give her up to 10ml before putting her to bed. They wanted to stop the itch and also make her sleep so she didn't scratch. I wouldn't give it to her and I was more or less told that i wasn't helping ehr by not giving it to her. i did then give her 5ml before bed. now she's 2 and having a bad night i'll give her 7.5ml but recently she had chickenpox and i was giving her 5ml every5 hours ish.

piriton syrup is not licened for the under 1's and not recommended for under twos except on the advice of a specialist. This is due to its sedating effect. There has not been enough testing to conclude its saftey.
If you are unsure about using the piriton, phone the hospital again and ask for advice.
Would think that from what you have described they have prescribed it for occasional use. If you are considdering it as an aid to help her sleep and seetle her condition every night, I would definately speak to the hosptal again.

I'm surprised it's not recommended for under 2's when it is marketed for over 1 year old. I wouldn't have thought they would be allowed to do that! We gave it to our son 9 months last week when we discovered he had an egg allergy.

if it's been prescribed for her, then I would give it to her before she goes to sleep (for her rash and her sleeping because maybe they are related)

as chapsmum said, if you feel it helps her sleep and her rash, it might be worth speaking to your specialist again to tell him that you are having to start using it because maybe there's another medicine regime you could be using (sorry I'm not a medical person but this is what I'd do if it was one of mine!)

Webley, the syrup is licensed for use on the over ones and can be used with supervision on under ones. The only reason it is not reccommended as far as I'm aware is the sedating effect.
The reason it is only avaliable behind the counter for an over one. It has to be given with good advice.

It's been specifically prescribed for her. I would give it a trial run and see if it improves her condition. Whilst not a "flare up" you do say it's getting worse.

Alternatively, if it's the piriton you are worried about, Medised Infant is paracetamol plus an antihistimine suitable from 3 months.

medised is not licensed for use on the NHS for the same questions about saftey.

But stick by my origional post, if you are unsure, give the hospital a wee phone.

i wish i had found it before going for our lastest visit, we're not back again until July

but the say to use antihistamines to treat all the time,

i'm just not sure about using meds when she seems fine,

she is a bad sleper but i think that is my fault and not the rash!
