DH and I always have dinner together on a Friday. It's the highlight of my week. We make an effort to be reasonably presentable, cook something nice together, laugh and catch up.

On fridays all our usual healthy eating rules go out of the window and we have what we fancy, including wine.

We always finish one bottle and usually start a second, although rarely finish it. Dh will have the rest on Sunday evening. The only other time I drink is when out with friends, once a month max.

So, I know technically this is binge drinking, but exactly how bad is it and what/how much damage are we doing?

other than this one vice we are very clean living, good home cooked healthy good, lots of exercise, no smoking etc.

Is this a serious question? Half a bottle of wine a week, at home with your husband, is NOT binge drinking!

TheInnerSea · 08/02/2013 16:09

well, it's more like 3/4 bottle and according to govt health people it is binge drinking. I, like you, don't think it can be that bad, but the experts tell us we can't drink all our weekly allowance in one go!

I really wouldn't worry. It's well within the recommended weekly total for a woman.

TheInnerSea · 08/02/2013 17:06

I know it's within the weekly limits, but the NHS defines binge drinking as 6 units in a short space of time for women and 8 units for men. The (1st) bottle we have for tonight has 10 units so I will probably drink around 8. (plus sometimes a sneaky brandy)

I'm not worried particularly, just interested to know why this is "a bad thing" according to government guidelines

This does not bode well for me! I'm meeting some friends tonight and we usually drink 2-3 bottles each once a month when we meet up. Talking and drinking makes you forget how many you have hadGrin

OP
That is not binge-drinking - it's scare tactics only. Just like a 12 year-old being told by DR that his was Obese as he was 1 kilo over the Standard. His mother was furious, but GP said they were obliged to use these shock tactics to get children to eat less fatty foods. More like then giving children eating disorders imo. Ridiculous.

No problem as far as i can see. My DH & i easily drink 2 bottles between us in an evening, any evening as well, not justfridays. I wouldnt worry too much at all.
