scaphoid fractures

so I went ice skating......

and about 4 hours ago I fell over, onto my bum, put my hands down first and my left hand made contact with the floor first

at the time I thought 'oh my god how embarassing' and 'ooo that stung the palm of my hand'

in the last hour my wrist and thumb have really started aching and feel hot

I've had this pain before -when I broke my scaphoid in my right wrist about 8 years ago

I've been told that scaphoid fractures don't show up for days on xrays and it's probably just a sprain anyway -I can't be that unlucky can I?

I have a wrist splint from when the ex hurt himself -would it do any harm if I put that on tonight and then decided how it felt in the morning

I don't think it would hurt to wait till morning, especially if OU can splint it in the meantime.

I fell ice skating in December and had exactly the same - immediate thumb pain, bruising and swelling.

After 3 1/2 weeks in a splint as it was still "suspicious" of a scaphoid fracture it was finally decided that it wasn't Grin.

I would definitely splint it tonight and go to minor injuries / a&e in the morning to get an x-ray. Often nothing does show initially, but it'll get you in the system for review at the right time.

Let us know how you get on.

DS had a scaphoid fracture that did show up immediately - but apparently he was lucky that it could be seen so clearly. They said if unsure they would have plastered it anyway and taken it off in a week or so after re-X-raying. He had 6 weeks in plaster, it came off for about 3-4 weeks and he promptly broke the ulna on same arm!

Hope you are ok and that it is just a sprain.

The 'aching/feeling hot' sounds suspicious. If it's a fracture it will probably throb like crazy when you go to sleep. Def. go to a & e in the morning...if for nothing more than to 'mark your place'. I'm not sure what your access to MRIs is like where you are but that would show a fracture right away, if the x-ray doesn't.

Ouch! Poor you Sad. Is it still hurting? Do you have anything for pain relief?

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 08/02/2013 21:41

Ouch!

At least a splint is better than a cast for now.

Xx
