Creatinine levels

Hi all had a repeat blood test today as my last creatinine levels for kidney function were 99 can anyone tell me if this is high. Thanks

I think anything over 80 is classed as high. Do you have an infection? Any type of illness raises my level - even colds , sore throats etc.

No nothing not been feeling great for few months so went to doc ruled out urine infection so checked blood for thyroid as was getting frequent urination and red face and tiredeness. It came back raises so they've checked again and booked for scan although its been two weeks AMD still not got scan date as yet

I am very pleased to tell you that a level of 99 is normal range and I am wondering what your level was before the Dr ordered a repeat test never mind a scan. I think anything under 120 is within the normal range but that is not saying that those people with higher than 120 have kidney disease. As a blood test of creatinine is only an estimated of kidney function alot of things can sway the level higher or lower, things like hydration, body muscle mass eg. an athletic would have a higher level than a 8 stone female. To get a true level of creat then a 24 hour urine test is needed.

Kidney disease is a specialised subject and I wonder if your GP has extra knowledge or interest in that area of expertise to alert him to send you for a scan. I know GPs protocols differ around the country but it is usually a nephrologist who would order the scan of the kidneys as they know what type of scan would be needed aswell as what they are searching for. So if a GP thaught there was something wrong with the kidneys I wonder why you were not referred to see a neph rather than send you to a radio-ologist.

I am sorry if you have had an anxious few weeks dealing with this but I am confused. I am out of touch with kidney issues since my transplant but I still know normal kidney and liver serum levels without google and a creatinine 99 is fine.

Thanks mangled my gp said same as fairplay said when I rang back that over 80 is classed as high. When they were looking at results on screen when I was there I noticed that they had come back from lab and the lab had written abnormal beside my kidney ones . How odd then!

I have a long renal history and 99 is high-ish if you have no pre existing problems. But I have been dehydrated in the past due to illness which has raised it and also taking aspirin or ibuprofen also raises mine. have you been ill. Mine was 82 and I had a stone which was causing problems and it raised to 106 once the stone was out it went back to 92 and has stayed there but has never gone back to 82

Thanks noddy, no I am fit as a fiddle otherwise (but I do take medication for epilespy which can in crease risk of kidney stones but have had no pains just some backache). haven't been ill either just last few months I've not felt quite right which prompted docs visit mainly due to me being extremely irritable and badtempered which is very unlike me

I am very confused at the GP saying your level is high as I was a million percent sure I was right. I am right that anything lower than 120 is in the normal range for creatinine.

However as I was confused I rang a friend (also transplanted) and asked why a Doctor would say that when its not correct. So it turns out that different labs use different measurements for serum results. Our lab uses mmol/L and some use umol/L.

If it was 99 mmol/L then you are within normal range 80-120

If it was 99 umol/L you are outside the normal range of 40-80

You live and learn.

Ah Ty mangled! How confusing! You would think they would all use same measurements wouldn't you to avoid confusion? How silly! Thank you for your help much appreciated

All I can say is sorry as I was unaware that the creatinine tests were measured a different way depending on which lab the hospitals used. I bet I confused you totally aswell as making myself look a complete twerp lol

I am ever so sorry to hear you have elevated levels but a good thing is that it has been picked up in a test and the GP can find the cause or maybe no cause and a higher marker doesn't always mean you have kidney disease.

It is a worry just waiting for the all clear from a smear test let alone waiting to see why your kidney function tests are higher than normal and I am sorry to hear you have to deal and cope with this waiting game also. I wish you well and I hope your elevated levels are "your normal" and nothing to be concerned about x

Whenever I have a blood test I automatically get called for a repeat test because of high creatinine levels, (can't remember the figures I'm afraid). But me and gp now know I'm naturally at the high end of the spectrum and not to be alarmed. I do recall once instance, however, where the reading was really high and I'm certain this was because I'd eaten a rare steak the night before the test, apparently red meat can skew the result. Don't know if any of this will be relevant to you op but I definitely worried unnecessarily about my results.

Thanks mummy, my last years results were only 82 so they've increased over a year. Should get results of second bloods tomorrow so fingers crossed

I know that Germany and Canada use different methods from UK. Very strange that here differing methods are used.
