Jaw sore on one side

I've had this on and off a couple of times this week: my jaw feels sore and strained on one side, it's an effort to open my mouth all the way, and affects my speech slightly (sounds like I'm lisping). Earlier this week, it came on suddenly, lasted 24 hours, and then stopped just as suddenly.

I saw the dentist three days ago, who said it was unlikely to be anything dental: he took an X-ray just in case a tooth was getting close to a nerve, but he said it showed there was nothing dental at all.

This has now restarted: jaw stiff and sore on the same side all day; I might see my GP if it carries on tomorrow, but does anyone have any ideas what this could be?

Mumps? I got this for 24 hours before I had full blown mumps.

I'm currently suffering with this (for 3 weeks so far). Saw gp after one week (about something else) and mentioned jaw. He said the jaw mechanism is very complex and can be strained. If so (and I don't remember noticeably hurting it) it will take several weeks to settle back to normal. It is getting very slightly better but I still can't open it fully and it is difficult to eat certain foods. It does feel a bit clunky when I move my bottom jaw from side to side so I do think it somehow got out of alignment. Glad I'm not the only one suffering with this. It seems such a stupid thing to have!

I have this right now and mine is sinusitis. When it is in the maxillary sinus then it can present as jaw and tooth ache. I actually went to the dentist as I thought it was an abscess.

Mumps . I had it at sweet 16 < vague memories>. Have you got a swelling behind that earlobe/top of neck at that side? If so, phone Gp. I was tols to isolate myself as infectious and if males get it risk of becoming infertile.< Non of my family got it though.
