Mums on Piles (idea for new MN book)

...plus i need some reassurance that i'm not going to die of piles.

WARNING: this post contains far TMI but i'm past caring and have no shame any more.

Have had them bad before after first pregnancy but they are reaching new heights (or depths -bleuch) now, 6m after dd2 was born. They're not grapey and sticky-outy as such but ITCHY as hell and now have been bleeding for last 3 days. It's not 'old' blood so i know it's nothing too sinister; i've been putting the charmingly-named anusol on my bum in the meantime.

DON'T tell me to go to the doctor - they'll just prescribe more of the same i'm sure. but are there any other creams that are better?

Dont mention the piles word..... I am having mine banded . I posted about this yesterday. I have had mine for years now. I tried all the creams to no avail.

Moomin go to the dr...sorry..lol My gp presecribed a stronger cream when I got piles after having DS. She also advised that when I put the cream on I put it on the piles but also put a bit on a piece of lint as then it wouldnt be sweated and rubbed away as easily. Fantastic thing was within 2 days of using the new cream I felt fab.

our family is cursed with piles! my brother got them for the first time last summer when he was staying with us after being very ill and therefore having a few problems with the old digestive system. he thundered down the stairs to me one night and announced 'OMG I'm bleeding out of my arse!!' I quickly diagnosed piles (Dr Moomin Medicine Woman) much to his complete horror and me and all my friends who had had children laughed at him for the next few weeks as he tried to convice us that it was worse than anything he'd ever suffered!

will try hot flannel trick. might go to doctor then....

I have suffered on and off since about half way through my first pregnancy. With DD the piles were honestly worse than giving birth. Having also given birth to DS I realise that I am lucky. But still....

i believe the incidence of piles is related to reading in the loo. remove all books from the bathroom. and when you sit down, if nothing's happened in 10 seconds, just walk away (pulling up your trousers as you go). (this was advice of a surgeon i once knew).

really?! That's interesting. dh and i are buggers for reading on the loo. (buggers might not be the best words to describe us but there you go)

definately apply the cream something with witch hazel and something to numb, I used anusol and push them back inside, worked for my bunch!!!
Also avoid straining and hot baths. If you can avoid stning on your feet for long periods of time and apply vasaline to you bum before you go to the toilet and push them bak in after, it worked for me, mine were gon a week.

After having my children, in hospital they filled latex gloves with ice, tied the wrist up, and then I was told to put the ice filled finger on the piles. Sounds gross but it helped. . Also proctosedyl cream from the gp was 100x more effective than anything over the counter.

I know everyone says it, but are you drinking enough? I've upped my fluid intake by 2 pints of squash a day, and along with some extra fruit/veg/nuts I've really noticed a difference. Not sure exactly what has helped.

I've read that certain brands of cream aren't suitable during breastfeeding. Is this true?

I'm suffering from piles too.

if you go to the dr they might not look at them - they didn't look at mine, but I did describe how I am feeling

The tip is to gently push them back up - if they are out then dry out & then they are itchy/hot. I found over the counter germaloids better ( thought anusol rubbish) Germoloids has a local anathestic, so the cooling effect is very helpful. From the doctor you can get protectdyrsol (sp?) which is a steroid - I am 26 weeks pregnant & it's ok to use.

I am also prescribed fibregel & lactulose (which makes me SO windy) I'm not taking this anymore though....I've re-discovered a creal called Fibre 1 which has 12.g fibre per bowl + milk. Works a treat - have a glass of diluted juice as well. I have also been an apple a day.
