Ear wax

Can anyone explain how olive oil unblocks ear wax? I know it softens it but how specifically?

I think it lubricates and loosens it slightly, over time.

I know this is a zombie thread but I've been searching the archive as my ear is full of wax, my practice nurse says they're phasing out syringing, I've been shoving olive oil in there and can feel it softening but it doesn't come e out
Do people have experience of using olive oil for a while, a week, a month ?.. and it coming out naturally? How does it come out if the gp no longer syringes !
