So if this is NOT a kidney infection, what could it be....

I have had two suspected kidney infections in the past month, the last one (last week) totally floored me and I was in bed for 4 days totally exhausted and unable to move. However, although when I went to the doctor and they did the stick test on my urine it showed blood and protein, they have been unable to grow a culture from either sample which would indicate that it is NOT after all an infection. This would be supported by the fact that the second time I was on antibiotics for 4 days before I started feeling any better so that would lead me to believe that it was not the antibiotics making me better.

I have an appt to see a Consultant Urologist tomorrow morning, but am shitting myself now that I have kidney cancer or something (I know is stupid)

The GP said she had no idea what it could be. Has anyone else had similar? Or know what else could cause protein and blood in the urine?

I have no major pain, a dull ache on my left side and the first time it went round the back and became a soreness in my lower back.

CD - kidney stones? (or in my case 'grit') - started as a severe case of cystitus and then bad back ache etc.....lasted about four/five days...Real pain when it passed out of the kidney...

I have had no cystitis type symptoms though. No increased frequency of urination or burning.

I really hope it is just that

CD were you on the anti-bs when you did the sample for culture? I think that can affect what grows from it.

Ds was poorly a few weeks ago with what I originally thought was a kidney infection. His dip test showed blood but the GP wasn't convinced he had an infection (he's 17 and it's unusual in chaps anyway). After a really bad bout of pain lasting a couple of hours he felt loads better and I wondered if it had maybe been a very small stone.

Good luck at the appointment tomorrow - they'll probably do an ultrasound and I'm sure it won't be anything serious. Fingers crossed anyway.

No both times they sent off the sample I gave when I went in to whinge.

I always thought that with kidney stones you were in screaming agony that's why I had discounted them

I have only had aches nothing that could really be described as pain

I was in pain for about four hours....- started as a dull ache, then was really uncomfortable (I was in Turkey at the ime and had all sorts of horrible thought sgoing through my head...)...by the time I saw a Dr I had no pain at all (he used an ultrasound and could see the 'grit')

CountessDracula · 24/04/2006 12:18

But did you feel really ill in yourself? I really was totally knocked out last week, sleeping 20 hours a day, no energy at all etc

No, not really, just the cystitis thing.......- sounds more like a kidnet infection to me - have a friend who has had it and been wiped out....

CountessDracula · 24/04/2006 12:22

yes but then why no culture - twice?

aha have just found something interesting

The risk of calcium stone formation is increased if you have certain medical diseases; for example, hyperparathyroidism and inflammatory bowel disease.

I have IBD (crohn's)
