Broke my 5th metatarsal 12 weeks ago, was in hard cast for 6 weeks and then an aircast boot for another 6 weeks, during which time I saw a physio once a week to help strengthen to my leg/foot and to work on the ankle which was of course incredibly stiff. I was given the all clear from the dr last week who said that the bone was "sufficiently healed" although not 100%, he said I could get back to exercising but to take it slowly. I have no pain at the site of the injury. The physio has given me some new exercises now that I've got the all clear, heal raises etc and a gym program to help get the strength back. I did some heal raises a couple of nights ago and attempted to do some just on the injured foot - could barely lift my heel off the ground but it's a start right? within minutes my ankle had swelled a little but by the morning was fine. I went to the gym, did 10 mins on the recumbent bike, 5 mins walking on the treadmill at 2.5mph
so hardly pushing it and then 5 mins row. I used a few leg machines with no weights if you see what I mean and some stretching. I then went out for a very late lunch and had quite a lot to drink but not enough so that I didn't know what I was doing. I didn't fall or knock my foot and yet this morning my ankle is really swollen! Surely I can't have overdone it doing so little?!? Is this normal - has anyone else had a similar experience? How long can I expect this swelling to go on for and will I ever be able to run again?
I have put on over a stone and am desperate to get it off!
