High white blood count

Has anyone has this with no obvious symptoms of infection? Dh is waiting for an op but his blood test came back with a high white blood count at his pre-op check. At first they thought he had a chest infection (although he had no symptoms) and gave him antibiotics. He's finished the course and had his blood done again but it's still high .

He's previously had a chest X-ray that was clear but they want him to have another one, and to check his urine & liver. Any ideas what it could be? He's currently taking progabalin & tramadol for nerve pain but the gp didn't seem to think they were the cause. I'm worried.

A few years back after a miscarriage I was found to have a high white blood count also,was retested every 6 weeks for about 6 months..found no cause of why it was high so basically they said they wouldn't test anymore as there was no explanation.I was fine so who knows why..one of those unexplainable things maybe? Usually it does mean an infection as that is when they increase to fight it.
But if he has nerve pain, pain is a signal to the brain that something is wrong and maybe his immune system has increased them to deal with it.

I had a high white count in all of my blood tests while I was preg with DD. They kept repeating the tests but there was no illness or obvious cause. No other symptoms.

I don't know if that's perhaps just normal for me. No-one seemed overly concerned tbh.

I am preg again now so will be interested as to whether the same thing comes up.

Thanks for your replies, I wondered if its his current problems that are causing it (failed hernia repair, plus two new hernias) which is what he's waiting for an op for. He's been told he needs the op quite urgently but it's being delayed because of this abnormal white blood count.

No-one seems to have said that one may be causing the other though, so he's got to have all these other tests done.

It is reasonable to think that is the cause, but Docs are being very responsible in trying to find any other cause before the op.
Does sound frustrating though. But he is getting a thorough testing.
