My sister has ovarian cancer and is due to have her ovary removed in 2 weeks time.

Also she has a clot and DVT and the hospital has put her on blood thinners.

Am i right in thinking that they will not operate while she is on the blood thinners or can they do this, just asking as my mum is very worried and we dont want to frighten my sister any more.

Thanks

They will most probably stop the thinners the day before (depending on what they are...is it warfarin?) and check clotting. They can give products to reverse the thinners also.
This isnt a huge problem and can be sorted without much fuss. HTH x

I hope it all goes well jenk x

They absolutely can do it.
They operate on people with heart conditions who take this long term.
They most definatley will not reverse the warfrin, as an operation will put her at a higher risk of blood clot, what they will do is adjust her blood clotting levels by using low molecular weight heparin injections (clexane) which is shorter acting than warfrin and the side affects not as bad and are more easily reversed. this is used routinely for most people post operatively.
Am sure the hosp will be aware but she may need to be seen by her gp for blood test before or admitted a few days before the operation. would be worth discussing it.
hope everything goes well.

thanks for the replies you have put our mind at ease.

Sister is going in the day before her op so presumably they will check her blood levels then.

Hi can definately do the op. If on warfarin may need to alter things a few days before, (can use injections instead). Is your sister REALLY sure that the consultant knows she is on blood thinners? If not may be worth calling his secretary and asking her to remind the consultant then they will be forced to get back to her if thay want them stopped. (Your sister doesn't want to get cancelled). Good luck to her for the op, hope it all goes well.
