backpain after epidural

I've never suffered with bachpain so sympathies to anyone who has its horrific does anyone have some advice for relief other than painkillers they just don't seem to work. I was warned about possible back pain after epidural but chose to take a chance.

Anyone?

When did you have the epidural?
I know some of my friends had backache for a few weeks afterwards.
I had an epidural in Sept 2011 and now that Im pregnant again I have pain in my lower back that I didn't have with DS1, it's quite sharp and I know it's as a result of the epidural. Fortunately for me I don't get it often. Have you gone to the doctor? Poor you, you must feel awful

painkillers and keep moving. it should go after few days.

Hi had epidural 17 months ago pain started 6 weeks after but getting progressively worse.Have not been doctors yet Just been trying to look for alternative treatment 1st. Thanks for your replies

yup I get back pain and that area is very tender to touch too. I had my son 7 years ago

Me too, and it is why I didn't want one (emcs so no choice). Dr told me there was no proven link, and just to do exercise. I am waiting to see the physio - can you self refer?

I had an epidural nearly 11 months ago and occassionally my back can still be achey and bruised feeling.

In the first few months it was very bruised feeling and I felt like I had no strength or control...almost as if I could fall over.

Pilates is good as it strengthens your core stomach muscles which help to protect your back if lifting etc....but with a baby/toddler who has time for excercise!!!

Thanks catsrule I will look into Pilate's. Hope yours gets better soon the pain seems worse in this weather doesn't it?

I had terrible back pain after an operation for which I had an epidural. I believe that the reason the back pain lasted so long was because I lost a lot of muscle mass to the tops of my legs, back and bumcheeks. The op cut through my front muscle so all the work was done by side and back muscles.

My biggest single regretwas that I wasn't more active with lots of walking during recovery and lost so much muscle tone. The pain was terrible for 8 weeks on codeine, morphine, diclophenac sp? And paracetamol.

Try and be as active as possible so not to loose muscle and you have my greatest sympathy, good luck with recovery

Yes I think the cold does contribute to it.

I aslo still have sore joints, which I'm told is also pregancy related, and the cold weather is making that worse too.

Good excuse for hot water bottles!

I have bad back pain since having epidural. I had my DS 15 months ago and the back pain became apparent about 5-6 months after. I had a horrible delivery with forceps & tear.

I spoke to my dr, was put on a muscle relaxant, didnt take away pain or help. Went back to dr and tried a different muscle relaxant that had pain killer too, also found this ineffective. Was referred for physio, immediately found out i'm hypermobile which makes it worse (my joints move more than they should putting extra strain on muscles). 3 months of physio exercises its a bit better as i'm always lifting correctly now as this does make a big difference.

However its still bad so i'm trying a short course of amitriptiline (its an anti-depressant) but in a low dose which can help relax muscles, so far been on this for 6 weeks and no improvement.

My physio & dr have both said its fine for me to take paracetamol or ibuprofen long term (following pack instructions, i.e not going over daily limit & taking ibuprofen with food).

Definitely see your doctor as any of the treatments i've tried so far may help you, i've also been told that accupuncture could help and also maybe massage but in my case its too painful to have massage.
