Blood Pressure medication & ANGER

Hi, Just wondering of anyone has any experience of anyone taking BP medication and experiencing side effects ? My dad is on BP tabs and 'we think' experiencing an increase in some worrying traits which we are wondering whether can be caused by BP meds. He does suffer with a bit of depression at times and I've read BP meds can highten this ?

  • emotional/ angry outbursts (blaming mum for things)
  • takes to his bed for anything up to 2-3 days (in a huff & sleeps)
  • he doesn't like people challenging him on anything e.g. "maybe it's a good idea to wear more sensible comfy shoes dad for your walks", he got really angry when different family members suggested it ...
  • doesn't trust anyone/ everyone is out to rip him off
  • gets agitated at things that worry him e.g. not being able to get hold of Vodafone who have cocked up my mums tariff.

Mum is at her wits end as these outbursts are happening a bit too often now. Dad is 73 and is a bit eccentric at times, but he's always been like that.

I'm worried it could be something more sinister. I've suggested mum go & talk to their GP to get advice re medication/ side effects but dad wouldn't agree to seeing anyone.

My dad was like this. He was on BP meds but apparently the aggressive behaviour was a side effect of some of te other ones. Is your dad taking anything else?

I've been prescribed 2 different drugs for high bp over the past few years and I don't recall anything in the blurb about changes to behaviour. And of course I an very sweet natured so it's not affecting me! Wink

You could probably look up side effects of his meds online. He does sound like a more extreme version of my pil, who was eventually persuaded to see the GP and was tested for a variety of potential problems but has come back all clear.

Hi, thanks for responding Smile

Yes, he's on :

  1. Bendroflumethiazide - water tablet
  2. Baby Aspirin
  3. Statins
  4. Ramipril - another BP med ?

Seems odd that he's being given 1 & 4 - 1 is commonly prescribed for hi bp so I don't know why they'd give 4 too?

How's his memory? My dad is on a lot of medication for his heart (history of angina, heart by-pass and valve replacement, high bp and high cholesterol). He is 81 and was also diagnosed with "vascular dementia with some alzheimer's pathology" a few years ago. He is definitely more irritable, snappy at my mum, doing slightly irrational things, but I think it is the memory problems and realising he's not remembering things rather than the medication. He's been on medications for years and wasn't like that all the time.

The only side effect I had was feeling extra cold and someone else the same.
I did have an illness that made me snappy, but with other symptoms too, and was an overactive Thyroid Gland, but unusual in a man of that age.
But if he refuses to go to GP, I don't know what you can do. They don't seem to do home visits anymore.
