sores just inside nostril...what is it?

Sorry to be banal and grim....I occasionally get what I can only imagine are cold sores - except it always appears just inside my right nostril - very red, itchy, very very sore, swollen with lots of little white raised spot type things (looks a bit like a cauliflower!)

Is this a coldsore or something else? It's really rather unattractive!! Starts off very sore then goes scabby. any ideas?!

I get these - think they are coldsores. You can use the same stuff as for the ones on yer mouth - I think I get Zovirax. nasty little F*

I always get them in the same place on my lips too. Suppose its a weak spot now so they always appear there.

desperatehousewife · 20/04/2006 14:50

never had one on my lip ever...just this special little place which makes me look like a glue sniffer.

Sometimes I think nasal sores can be treated with antibiotic cream. Dr will advise you.

bakedpotato · 20/04/2006 15:41

I had something like this when rundown -- GP said it was rhinitis, his magic cream made it go away

jabberwocky · 20/04/2006 15:47

My guess is that it's herpetic. Your gp can start you on acyclovir for it to keep the episode from getting too uncomfortable.

booge · 20/04/2006 15:52

Wow, I been getting this too since DS was born and haven't been able to work out what's going on. Thanks for bringing it up Smile

desperatehousewife · 20/04/2006 16:48

am preg so don't know if i should be putting anything on it. I only get it if i'm run down or have had a cold for ages and ages.

go to pharmacist and wave it at him - quicker than getting GP appointment and they can normally tell if it's a cold sore or not, and will also tell you what's safe to use when pg.

jabberwocky · 20/04/2006 16:56

acyclovir is safe during pregnancy. I had to take it for Bell's PAlsy with ds (also a herpes related problem) and now carry it with me in case of another attack as time is of the essence with that. I checked the safety out thoroughly since I am 6 weeks pg.

Northerner · 20/04/2006 16:56

Yep it's a cold sore. I always get one in my nostril when run down or if I've had a cold and been blowing my nose. Zoviraxx is fab but works best when you feel the tingle. I always carry a tube with me. It's safe to use in pregnancy.

cheers northener.

Don't know if or why it works, but my mum swears by neat perfume on cold sores. Maybe the alcohol does something? Anyway, I always use this in addition to zovirax, and it seems to speed up the healing process.

For cold sores up nose, I would put sudocrem or the like up your nose before bed. Otherwise I'm sure I pick mine in my sleep, as they take ages to heal.

Kelly1978 · 20/04/2006 18:04

I used to get bouts of these, still do occassionally. And now I know what it is! I always thought they were jsut spots, had no idea it was possible to get cold sores anywhere other than the mouth.

desperatehousewife · 20/04/2006 18:31

well glad i have opened up a whole new world of icky disease for everyone!!!!

Not sure about the neat perfume - wouldn't smelling the perfume all the time make yu feel sick!?

dabbing on surgical spirit works too. Or vodka!
