I'll try make this short..

About 3 months ago in the crack of my boyfriends bum went bright red, hard, heat was coming from it and he couldn't sit or lie down on it. We went to the doctors and they said it was an in growing hair. They gave him anti-biotics but it was spreading further across his bum and was hurting more. We went back to the doctors 3 days later and he had to be rushed to surgery and they drained it and said he was lucky they caught it as the infection was getting into his blood and could of killed him.

He had a district nurse come around for 6 weeks packing it so it could heal from the inside out. It then healed but around 3 weeks after a little hole appeared in it, it started to hurt, go hard, produce heat and he couldn't sit in it. They put him back on medication for a week. After the week it went back to normal.. But two weeks after finishing the antibiotics it burst again. The same happened but the hole got a little bigger. Obviously the district nurse came around to check on it for a week whilst he was on medication.

Yesterday it started hurting, It burst and it feels it's got something growing under the scar and the holes got even bigger. We haven't been able to get into the doctors today and he won't call 111... I was wondering if anyone knows what it is? Surely it shouldn't burst every 3 weeks?

They said it was due to his job being a fork lift truck driver but since his first burst after the Operation he had to take another week of and got Fired.. So it's done it twice since he hasn't been working. Any advice will be good please :)

Bump..I wish I had some insight for you.,

Whitegrenache · 27/12/2012 14:50

Sounds like it is refilling and needs to removed deeper surgically. I would definitely go to out of hours or gps tomorrow for anti biotics or he may get septicaemia

RileyTheLittleMonster · 27/12/2012 14:53

Our doctors said they won't have any normal or emergency appointment's for about 3 days due to it being Christmas.. He's too stubborn to ring 111 as he said "it's not hurting" even though when I put my finger on it he jumps!

It's not uncommon for it to recur. It's called a pylonidal sinus (sp?) if you want to google. I would call NHS direct or GP for advice or go to A&E. It is dangerous to leave it due to the proximity to the spine. Any infection has a direct route to the brain through the spinal fluid.

He won't go in because he "can't be arsed". Last time he didn't listen to me, he only just had surgery on time before it could of made him servilely ill

There was something similar to this on the tv show embarrasing bodies. I think it was called a sinus, basically a deep infection that had to be removed by surgery and if I recall correctly the guy who had it, went for lazer hair removal to ensure the hair follicle died and didn't cause any further infection.

He had surgery about 3 months ago the hole was about 3 inches deep and had to heal inside out but it bursts every 3 weeks and it has a hole which started was the size of a pin when it first burst. It's getting bigger.

he needs surgery, it's quite dangerous to let this go, it sounds like a pilondial cyst, if the infection spreads could get blood poisoning

it's not jut going to go away , he must go to the docs today

RileyTheLittleMonster · 27/12/2012 15:24

He has finally said he is ringing 111 as we can't get into the doctors. I've just goggled a Sinus and it doesn't look like that it's never been raised. It's literally skin level with a hard lump under the skin.. The scar is about 3 inches wide and long and in the middle at the edge closest into the crack there is a hole which is getting bigger. It's not hurting him now but the hole is green and his bum is letting of heat and is red around the scar.

Called 111 they said dress it and call the doctors tomorrow.. Even though we told them we have no dressings and doctors can't fit us in for three days!

Go to A&E, don't mess about with it!

RileyTheLittleMonster · 27/12/2012 18:10

The nearest A&E is over an hour away. The woman on the phone didn't even care. But said she would say that surgery is needed but its up to our doctor what happens

In that case, ring your GP in the morning and call them out!

In that case, ring your GP in the morning and call them out!

RileyTheLittleMonster · 27/12/2012 19:10

She did say we had to say it's urgent and they have to fit us in, so hopefully they will!

AmberLeaf · 27/12/2012 19:18

Do you have a walk in GP/nurse place?

Or go to A&E seriously.

RileyTheLittleMonster · 27/12/2012 20:47

No, got to call at 8am to book appointment. Our closest A&E isn't very good they'll probably send us home after waiting 5 hours!

OP posts:
AmberLeaf · 27/12/2012 20:58

Its a Pilonidal cyst and if its green it is infected, so he needs antibiotics and it needs cleaning/dressing.

I know he has had surgery already, but it is very common for them to reoccur.

He is an adult though so its totally down to him, but it is serious and he needs to get it sorted.

A&E will clean and dress it then tell you to see the nurse at your GP practice for ongoing dressing.

RileyTheLittleMonster · 27/12/2012 21:12

He is calling tomorrow morning to get an appointment, on the phone they said he may need surgery again.. it needs sorting because he got fired because of it and if it keeps reoccuring every three weeks no employer will want him

OP posts:
YNK · 28/12/2012 00:53

He needs to be readmitted to hospital, possible (likely) for more surgery. You can wait for a GP referral or go straight in through A&E.
Your (or rather his) choice.
A&E will not turn him away if he needs urgent surgery.

RileyTheLittleMonster · 28/12/2012 14:52

He has to go through referral first, should be getting surgery about 2 weeks if needed
