Very sore knee - medical attention or let it sort itself?

So I stupidly went ice skating last night and fell over, landing on my right knee.

It's now pretty swollen in the front, mainly just under my kneecap and there is one really tender area if I touch it on the bottom of my kneecap. No bruising at all.

I can walk fine, and there's no pain on walking or resting but if I kneel on it I'm shooting through the roof with pain!

Any ideas what this could be, and am I ok to let it sort itself (we're going skiing in a few weeks!)

Sounds like the knee cap has been damaged, unless it is just a bruise which will heal quite quickly. I'd get it X-rayed in case fractured. I tore my cartiledge, and the knee was very swollen and agony to walk on, so not likely to be any of the soft tissues as walking is not painful for you.

I'm hoping it's a bruise that isn't visible - fingers crossed!

Rest. Elevate. Ice.

I'm not sure what "a bruise that isn't visible" is supposed to be, but I'd see a doctor if it's not much better in a few days.

Thanks, thats's my plan,

It's sore like a bruise, so I suppose I'm hoping that there's a bruise deep down that isn't visible on the surface of the skin?

I hit my shin where there is mostly bone, and I got no bruise. GP said that bruises occur mostly in muscley places. I can feel a big bone below my kneecap, on which you kneel. But I'd get it checked, all the same, to make sure.
